{"id":491480,"date":"2019-10-21T08:33:04","date_gmt":"2019-10-21T14:33:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=901611"},"modified":"2019-10-21T08:33:04","modified_gmt":"2019-10-21T14:33:04","slug":"hear-bob-dylan-johnny-cashs-original-demo-for-wanted-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kqzr\/music-news\/hear-bob-dylan-johnny-cashs-original-demo-for-wanted-man\/","title":{"rendered":"Hear Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash\u2019s Original Demo for \u2018Wanted Man\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bob-dylan-johnny-cash.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bob-dylan\/\">Bob Dylan\u2019s<\/a> archivists have released the original demo for \u201cWanted Man,\u201d a song Dylan wrote for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/johnny-cash\/\">Johnny Cash<\/a> in 1969.<\/p>\n<p>The demo recording, which features the two musicians dueting on the song with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/carl-perkins\/\">Carl Perkins<\/a> playing the guitar, will be featured on the upcoming box set <em>Bob Dylan (Featuring Johnny Cash) \u2013 Travelin\u2019 Thru, 1967-1969: The Bootleg Series Vol. 15<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Cash debuted \u201cWanted Man\u201d on his 1969 live album,&nbsp;<em>At San Quentin<\/em>, and would later release a studio version. (It was later covered by artists such as Nick Cave and George Thorogood.) Amazingly, Cash had only learned the song a week prior \u2014 at the same informal Nashville session with Dylan and Perkins that was captured on the demo recording \u2014 before opening his San Quentin set with the number.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5kHiuxn0FhI?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As can be heard on the demo, Cash didn\u2019t exactly have the lyrics down right away, and there\u2019s a lot of stumbling about, laughing and improvising.<\/p>\n<p>You can also hear the voice of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/june-carter-cash\/\">June Carter Cash<\/a> at the beginning of the recording, warning Cash, \u201cHoney, I don\u2019t want to interrupt your train of thought, but be sure that Bob puts the melody to that song, that \u2018Wanted Man\u2019\u2026you forgot the melody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/bob-dylan-johnny-cash-wanted-man-demo-901611\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Rolling Stone<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bob Dylan\u2019s archivists have released the original demo for \u201cWanted Man,\u201d a song Dylan wrote for Johnny Cash in 1969.
