{"id":491525,"date":"2019-10-22T09:38:22","date_gmt":"2019-10-22T15:38:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=902189"},"modified":"2019-10-22T09:38:22","modified_gmt":"2019-10-22T15:38:22","slug":"wire-drops-serene-new-song-cactused","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kqzr\/music-news\/wire-drops-serene-new-song-cactused\/","title":{"rendered":"Wire Drops Serene New Song \u2018Cactused\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/wires.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cYou better watch your step, you shouldn\u2019t place your bet,\u201d singer-bassist Graham Lewis sings serenely on the chorus of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/wire\/\" id=\"auto-tag_wire\" data-tag=\"wire\">Wire<\/a>\u2019s new single \u201cCactused,\u201d which will appear on their upcoming album, <em>Mind Hive<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis\u2019 lines are like the polar opposite of singer-guitarist Colin Newman, who sings upbeat, Dada-like verses about \u201cthe collective \u2026 algorithmically scanning.\u201d They play propulsive, driving riffs, but there\u2019s still something gentle about it. The record, which is the band\u2019s 17th studio album, is due out January 24th.<\/p>\n<p>The imagery in the video for the song comes from an upcoming documentary about the group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wire-film.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><em>People in a Film<\/em><\/a>, which will come out in late 2020; the film\u2019s producers met their crowdfunding goal last summer. The group is collaborating with the filmmakers on the picture, which, they say, \u201caims to express the very essence of the band \u2014 the personalities, their music, their worldview, their history and their future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p>The band will embark on a short U.S. tour this spring after the album comes out.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2017 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/wire-reflect-on-40-years-as-punks-ultimate-cult-band-128633\/\">Rolling Stone<\/a> <\/em>interview about the band\u2019s 40-year history as the preeminent cult post-punk band, Lewis looked back on how the band started out and why the songs on their influential debut, <em>Pink Flag<\/em>, were so short.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe became rather fascinated with the beginnings and endings of songs and putting shocking stops in \u2014 like the one in \u201912XU,&#8217;\u201d he said. \u201cThe shorter songs developed naturally. When the words ran out, Colin said, \u2018That\u2019s it.\u2019 We went, \u2018Yes, why not?\u2019 It used to drive the punks nuts. They\u2019d sort of get pogoing, and then it would stop.
