{"id":491529,"date":"2019-10-22T09:54:33","date_gmt":"2019-10-22T15:54:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=902208"},"modified":"2019-10-22T09:54:33","modified_gmt":"2019-10-22T15:54:33","slug":"watch-trey-anastasio-of-phish-cover-bon-ivers-towers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kqzr\/music-news\/watch-trey-anastasio-of-phish-cover-bon-ivers-towers\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch Trey Anastasio of Phish Cover Bon Iver\u2019s \u2018Towers\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/trey-anastasio-bon-iver-cover.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Phish frontman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/trey-anastasio\/\" id=\"auto-tag_trey-anastasio\" data-tag=\"trey-anastasio\">Trey Anastasio<\/a> fittingly covered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bon-iver\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bon-iver\" data-tag=\"bon-iver\">Bon Iver<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=t60roHM1t7o\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cTowers\u201d<\/a> during a concert in Justin Vernon\u2019s hometown of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">JamBase shared a fan-shot video of the performance in which Anastasio turns the lush tune into acoustic ballad. \u201cOh, the sermons are the first to rest\/ Smoke on Sundays when you\u02bcre drunk and dressed\/ Out the hollows where the swallow nests,\u201d Anastasio sang over nimble finger picking, giving a sense of what \u201cTowers\u201d might\u2019ve sounded like had Bon Iver recorded it during the <i>For Emma, Forever Ago<\/i> era.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Following the cover, Anastasio joked to the audience that it was \u201ckind of embarrassing coming to someone\u2019s town and playing their song\u2026 but I love that song and I love that album.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Vernon, in turn, is an avowed Phish fan, and recently discussed the band\u2019s role in shaping his ideas about music and improvisation <a href=\"https:\/\/the-time-crisis-universe.fandom.com\/wiki\/Episode_102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">during an interview<\/a> on Ezra Koenig\u2019s Beats 1 show, <em>Time Crisis<\/em>. \u201cMy community of friends in high school, that was our music,\u201d Vernon said. \u201cThe sense of improvisation \u2014 very alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Coincidentally, Koenig also came up during Anastasio\u2019s Eau Claire concert, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jambase.com\/article\/trey-anastasio-bon-iver-cover-eau-claire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">JamBase<\/a> notes. Anastasio reportedly told the crowd about a dream he had in which he and Koenig went to see a Tool concert where, for some reason, Tool was dressed as an Eighties hair metal band.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Anastasio has a handful of dates left on his fall <a href=\"https:\/\/trey.com\/tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">solo tour<\/a>.
