{"id":491567,"date":"2019-10-23T12:42:40","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T18:42:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=902769"},"modified":"2019-10-23T12:42:40","modified_gmt":"2019-10-23T18:42:40","slug":"lizzo-refutes-truth-hurts-credit-controversy-that-song-is-my-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kqzr\/music-news\/lizzo-refutes-truth-hurts-credit-controversy-that-song-is-my-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Lizzo Refutes \u2018Truth Hurts\u2019 Credit Controversy: \u2018That Song Is My Life\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/lizzo-truth-hurts.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/lizzo\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lizzo\" data-tag=\"lizzo\">Lizzo<\/a> rebuffed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/lizzo-truth-hurts-plagiarism-claim-899673\/\">claims that she did not properly credit<\/a> two songwriters on her hit \u201cTruth Hurts\u201d in a note posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lizzo\/status\/1187056255891693568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Twitter<\/a> Wednesday. \u201cThat song is my life, and its words are my truth,\u201d the musician wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last week, songwriting brothers Justin and Jeremiah Raisen claimed that in April 2017 they took part in a writing session with Lizzo, Jesse Saint John and Yves Rothman, during which they all wrote a song called \u201cHealthy\u201d that contained the memorable line, \u201cI just took a DNA test, turns out I\u2019m 100% that bitch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B3oRS_0liE_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Instagram<\/a> post, Justin Raisen claimed he and his brother were never contacted about being credited for the portions of \u201cHealthy\u201d that ended up in \u201cTruth Hurts,\u201d and their attempts to solve the matter were repeatedly shot down (complicating matters, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/15\/arts\/music\/lizzo-truth-hurts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a> previously reported that the Raisens had revoked their claim over the song via their publisher, Kobalt).<\/p>\n<p> <!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p>In response, Lizzo reiterated her side of the story, saying that the \u201cDNA test\u201d line was inspired by a meme she saw \u201cthat resonated with me, a meme that made me feel like 100% that bitch. They had nothing to do with the line or how I chose to sing it. There was no one in the room when I wrote \u2018Truth Hurts,\u2019 except me, Ricky Reed and my tears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While Lizzo denied that the Raisens contributed to the song, she did acknowledge another musician, singer Mina Lioness, who previously claimed she was responsible for the \u201cDNA test\u201d line. In February 2018, Lioness and Lizzo <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MinaLioness\/status\/962049061548212226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">exchanged tweets<\/a>, in which the former claimed that the meme Lizzo saw was drawn from a February 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MinaLioness\/status\/835347243020451840\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">tweet<\/a> of hers that read, \u201cI did a DNA test and found out I\u2019m 100% that bitch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At the time, Lizzo denied having ever seen Lioness\u2019 tweet, but in her post Thursday she said, \u201cThe creator of the tweet is the person I am sharing my success with\u2026 not these men.
