Leonard Cohen<\/a>\u2019s experience as a Buddhist monk is the inspiration for the new video for \u201cHappens to the Heart,\u201d the first official single off the late poet-singer\u2019s posthumous final album Thanks for the Dance<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The \u201cHappens to the Heart\u201d video, directed by Sia collaborator Daniel Askill, is the latest in a series dubbed Nowness<\/a>, a partnership between the Cohen estate and Sony Music Canada that will feature international filmmakers creating visuals to accompany Thanks for the Dance<\/em> tracks.<\/p>\n

Nowness creative director Bunny Kinney said in a statement: \u201cOur ambition with this series of short films is not only to uphold and celebrate Leonard Cohen\u2019s incredible artistic legacy with new visuals, helmed by some of the most exciting image-makers working today, but to also further explore Cohen\u2019s work and the core thematics of his music: from love and loss to artistic expression itself, identity, self-reflection, transformation and transcendence.\u201d<\/p>\n

For \u201cHappens to the Heart,\u201d Askill found inspiration in the five years that Cohen spent as a Buddhist monk while living at California\u2019s Mount Baldy Zen Center. \u201cI wanted to make something that spoke to Leonard\u2019s years as a zen monk,\u201d Askill said in a statement. \u201cThis film is a quiet, symbolic narrative that charts the letting go of ego and the trappings of fame.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Thanks for the Dance<\/em>\u2018s introductory track \u201cThe Goal<\/a>\u201d was a sparse minute-long spoken word piece, \u201cHappens to the Heart\u201d is a more traditional Cohen work as the rock laureate weaves an intricate, lyrically dense tale with a subtle melody and potent chorus over the song\u2019s five minutes.<\/p>\n

Thanks for the Dance<\/em>, out November 22nd and available to preorder<\/a> now, also features musical contributions from Beck, Damien Rice, Feist, the National\u2019s Bryce Dessner, Arcade Fire\u2019s Richard Reed Parry, Daniel Lanois and more.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn composing and arranging the music for his words, we chose his most characteristic musical signatures, in this way keeping him with us,\u201d Leonard\u2019s son Adam Cohen said in a statement. \u201cWhat moves me most about the album is the startled response of those who have heard it. \u2018Leonard lives\u2019! they say, one after the other.\u201d<\/p>\n
