What\u2019s a Kanye West<\/a> album rollout without a little drama? <\/span><\/p>\n

After multiple feints and missed release dates, West\u2019s latest full-length, <\/span>Jesus Is King<\/span><\/i>, has finally arrived. The album\u2019s official release followed listening events in cities that included Detroit, New York City, and Los Angeles. West worked on Jesus Is King<\/em> until the last possible moment \u2014 it was supposed to come out Thursday at midnight, but the rapper tweeted<\/a> that he was still \u201c<\/span>fixing mixes\u201d on three different songs.<\/p>\n

Jesus Is King <\/span><\/i>marks<\/span> the first West album since last year\u2019s <\/span>Ye<\/span><\/i>. Though <\/span>Ye <\/span><\/i>debuted at Number One, it was the least successful commercial release of West\u2019s high-flying career, and he planned to follow it quickly with a project titled <\/span>Yandhi<\/span><\/i>. The initial release date,<\/span> September 29th, 2018, came and went without a new project, as did a subsequent release date of November 23rd, which had been announced by West\u2019s wife, Kim Kardashian. <\/span><\/p>\n

In January 2019, West suddenly changed directions: He began performing with a choir at events that he dubbed \u201cSunday Service,\u201d often reimagining his own catalog with gospel arrangements. He\u2019s been working with the gospel heavy-hitter Jason White, who served as the longtime minister of music for the West Angeles Church of God and Christ and won producer of the year at gospel\u2019s Stellar Awards. And West has also courted the gospel power couple of singer Erica Campbell and her husband, producer Warryn Campbell, by bringing his Sunday Service to Warryn\u2019s L.A. church. <\/span><\/p>\n

In August, Kardashian once again helped her husband\u2019s rollout efforts, sharing what appeared to be an album tracklist, a new title \u2014 <\/span>Jesus Is King <\/span><\/i>\u2014 and a release date of September 27th. Once again, the album failed to materialize as promised. Instead, <\/span>West conceived a pair of events in Detroit on the date: a Sunday Service during the day and an evening<\/span> premiere of <\/span>Jesus Is King: A Kanye West Experience <\/span><\/i>at the Fox Theatre. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe just found out about it, actually,\u201d a spokesperson for the Fox told Rolling Stone <\/em><\/a><\/span>after West announced the premiere<\/span>. \u201cWe usually don\u2019t [book any events day-of], but it\u2019s Kanye West \u2014 he can get away with anything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That Friday in Detroit<\/a>, West told the crowd that he was still recording new verses for Jesus Is King<\/em>. <\/span>He performed at several similar Sunday Service events before announcing another release date for Jesus Is King <\/em>on Monday via Twitter<\/a>. West also participated in a lengthy, wide-ranging interview with Zane Lowe, which covered everything from his \u201cpornography addiction\u201d to his political ambitions to his relationship with Drake. West also called himself the \u201cgreatest artist in human existence.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to the long-awaited album, West\u2019s new IMAX documentary<\/a>, also titled Jesus Is King<\/em>, will play in theaters on Friday. On top of that, West claimed to Lowe<\/a> he will release yet another album, Jesus Is Born<\/em>, on Christmas.<\/p>\n
