While no cause of death was provided, the guitarist was undergoing treatment in his long battle with liver disease; in 1994, Barrere contracted hepatitis C, and in 2015 was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/entertainment\/2017\/05\/paul_barrere_of_little_feat.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">diagnosed<\/a> with liver cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is with great sorrow that Little Feat must announce the passing of our brother guitarist, Paul Barrere, this morning at UCLA Hospital,\u201d Little Feat said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.littlefeat.net\/news.html?n_id=3859\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaul auditioned for Little Feat as a bassist when it was first being put together\u2014in his words, \u2018as a bassist I make an excellent guitarist\u2019\u2014and three years later joined the band in his proper role on guitar.&nbsp; Forty-seven years later, he was forced to miss the current tour, which will end tomorrow, due to side effects from his ongoing treatment for liver disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p>The band continued, \u201cHe promised to follow his doctor\u2019s orders, get back in shape, and rock on the beach at the band\u2019s annual gathering in Jamaica in January 2020.&nbsp; \u2018Until then,\u2019 he wrote, \u2018keep your sailin\u2019 shoes close by\u2026if I have my way, you\u2019re going to need them!&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bonnie Raitt <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheBonnieRaitt\/status\/1188332916943679488\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a>, \u201cI just heard about the passing of another dear friend, Little Feat\u2019s Paul Barrere. A brilliant guitarist, singer and songwriter\u2014a cornerstone of one of the greatest bands of all time. I\u2019m glad he is free of pain and may he rest in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S8V1olWt8I0?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Barrere joined the Lowell George-led Little Feat prior the recording of the band\u2019s breakthrough 1973 album <em>Dixie Chicken<\/em>; on the LP, Barrere co-wrote the song \u201cWalkin\u2019 All Night,\u201d which the <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> review at the time called \u201cthe album\u2019s purest rock &amp; roll song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The guitarist also contributed \u201cSkin It Back\u201d and helped co-write the title track for the 1974 album <em>Feats Don\u2019t Fail Me Now<\/em>.
