To fill out the unfinished manuscript that he left behind \u2014 more than 50 handwritten pages \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2JH6QYQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><em>The Beautiful Ones<\/em><\/a> features behind-the-scenes photos, scrapbooks, and handwritten lyric sheets provided by Prince\u2019s estate, including the original treatment for his iconic song \u201cPurple Rain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a coming-of-age story of a kid absorbing the world around him and then creating an artistic vision \u2014 before the hits and fame that would come to define him <em>New Yorker<\/em> writer Dan Piepenbring, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2019\/09\/09\/the-book-of-prince\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">who talked to him<\/a> four days before his death, has penned the introduction \u2014 which you can hear in this exclusive audio excerpt. For the Prince-penned parts, two life-long Prince fans are narrating. Jazz singer Esperanza Spalding and Nigerian-American actress and singer Adepero Oduye (<em>Pariah, 12 Years a Slave<\/em>) read the audiobook, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2JH6QYQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">available now<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecording with Esperanza Spalding and Adepero Oduye was an amazing experience,\u201d says Laura Wilson, the audiobook producer. \u201cWe were looking for strong women\u2019s voices to read Prince\u2019s , in part because Prince himself was a powerful mentor to a number of different female musicians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Wilson explains, Spalding brought a \u201cmusician\u2019s understanding to the insights into his creative process\u201d that Prince provided in his memoir. \u201cMs. Oduye is a remarkable actress who was able capture some of the immediacy of Prince\u2019s stories from his young adulthood.
