Six months after the release of Blue, <\/em>her 1971 masterpiece, Joni Mitchell<\/a> pondered on what to gift her friends with for Christmas. \u201cAll my friends were kind of nouveau riche, so buying Christmas presents was going to be really difficult,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201cI had put the drawings into a ring binder accompanied by handwritten lyrics.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nearly 50 years later, Mitchell\u2019s intimate gift was widely released for the first time last month. Titled Morning Glory on the Vine<\/em><\/a> \u2014 a line from Neil Young\u2019s \u201cMotion Pictures (For Carrie)\u201d \u2014 the collection features more than 30 original watercolor paintings, handwritten lyrics and poems. Published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the book contains additional art that Mitchell intended to include in 1971.<\/p>\n

In the introduction, Mitchell describes going to check on her engineer Henry Ley and his wife Nadine after a fire had spread north of Malibu. \u201cAs I walked in, I saw my Christmas book on top of one of the bags,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI couldn\u2019t believe that was one of the things they were saving.\u201d<\/p>\n

Highlights of the book include the handwritten lyrics to \u201cA Case of You\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m a Radio\u201d (later changed to \u201cYou Turn Me On, I\u2019m a Radio\u201d on 1972\u2019s For the Roses<\/em>) and subtle portraits of James Taylor playing the piano and Judy Collins surrounded by flowers.<\/p>\n

Mitchell has been slowly venturing out in public since battling health issues in 2015. She recently attended her peers\u2019 concerts<\/a>, including her own 75th birthday tribute celebration. On September 27th, she made an appearance at her old pal Cameron Crowe\u2019s Almost Famous<\/em> musical<\/a> in San Diego.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been a long time coming in making this book public, but we\u2019re publishing it now,\u201d she continued. \u201cWork is meant to be seen, or heard, as the case may be. It\u2019s always exciting to launch your work into the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
