Genius, a site known for crowd-sourcing hip-hop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/lyrics\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lyrics\" data-tag=\"lyrics\">lyrics<\/a> (and related annotations) from listeners and occasionally artists, is accusing the massive search engine of \u201cmisappropriating content from Genius\u2019s website\u201d and using it \u201cfor [Google\u2019s] own financial benefit and\u2026 Genius\u2019s financial detriment.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company\u2019s lawsuit \u201cseeks to halt [Google\u2019s] unethical and unfair anticompetitive practices.\u201d In addition, Genius is asking for at least $50 million \u201c<\/span>to recover damages<span>\u201d incurred from Google\u2019s alleged copying.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Genius publicly accused Google \u2014 and <\/span><span>LyricFind, the company that is supposed to provide the words to songs when users search for them on Google&nbsp; \u2014 <\/span><span>of stealing lyrics in June. \u201c<\/span><span>Over the last two years, we\u2019ve shown Google irrefutable evidence again and again that they are displaying lyrics copied from Genius,\u201d Ben Gross, the company\u2019s chief strategy officer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/lyrics-site-genius-com-accuses-google-of-lifting-its-content-11560677400?ns=prod\/accounts-wsj\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told <\/a><\/span><i><span>The Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/i><span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At the time, Genius claimed that it had a watermark system to protect the lyrics on its site, and that the watermark appeared in numerous lyric read-outs provided by Google. But Darryl Ballantyne, LyricFind\u2019s Chief Executive, denied that his company was sourcing lyrics from Genius. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In June, Google took a conciliatory tone. <\/span><span>\u201cWe\u2019ve asked our lyrics partner to investigate the issue to ensure they\u2019re following industry best practices in their approach,\u201d Satyajeet Salgar, a Group Product Manager for Google, wrote i<\/span><span>n a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.google\/products\/search\/how-we-help-you-find-lyrics-google-search\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">blog post<\/a>. <\/span><span>\u201cWe always strive to uphold high standards of conduct for ourselves and from the partners we work with,\u201d Salgar added.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But Genius\u2019 lawsuit alleges that Google is grandstanding without addressing the real problem. The suit accuses Google of offering up little besides \u201cplatitudes of \u2018high standards\u2019 and \u2018best practices&#8217;\u201d while \u201ccontinu[ing] to exploit content misappropriated from Genius\u2019 website.\u201d In addition, Genius alleges that Google is now \u201cattempting to conceal [its] misappropriation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When asked to comment on Genius\u2019 suit, a representative for Google referred&nbsp;<em>Rolling Stone&nbsp;<\/em>back to the company\u2019s June blog post.
