In poems and songs, \u201cimages\u201d are those clusters of words that appeal so vividly to our senses that we tend to remember them long after we\u2019ve forgotten the rest of the words surrounding them.<\/p>\n

Think of T.S. Eliot\u2019s \u201cwhen the evening is spread out against the sky\/like a patient etherized upon a table,\u201d from \u201cThe Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,\u201d or Shakespeare\u2019s \u201cThat time of year thou mayest in me behold\/when yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang\/upon those boughs which shake against the cold,\u201d from Sonnet 73.<\/p>\n

Or, to bring it a bit closer home, Hank Williams\u2019 \u201cthe silence of a falling star\/lights up a purple sky,\u201d from \u201cI\u2019m So Lonesome I Could Cry.\u201d<\/p>\n
