True to the title of her new album, <em>Every Girl<\/em>, the Georgia native is quick-thinking, funny, and gracious, offering a hug and a thank you after the interview. Here she chats about listening for lyrics, the lessons she learned from her parents, and the one duet partner that she just had to have.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CMT: We\u2019ll start with \u201cEvery Girl.\u201d Is there a certain line in that song that grabbed you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TY: The line I loved was, \u201cYou got this baby, so what if you don\u2019t?\u201d That\u2019s the line to me that was saying we all try to be on our A-game and we all want to show our best selves, but we are all flawed and we all make mistakes and that\u2019s OK. I mean, I\u2019m 54, I haven\u2019t made a record in a while. \u2026 I do write some, but not very much, and so I\u2019m counting on finding songs that really resonate with me. And you just don\u2019t know what\u2019s out there. I was really pleasantly surprised at the depth of material. So I got happy really quick. I\u2019m like, OK, this is going to be fun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I have to ask about \u201cThe Matador\u201d because I love the drama of that song.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I love the drama of that, too. You know, she writes mostly by herself and she\u2019s really an artist. She doesn\u2019t sit in a room and go, \u201cOK, Trisha Yearwood is recording next week, we gotta write something for her.\u201d She writes because it has to come out of her. I came into this business at a time when we still had so many of these legendary artists who have now gone on. I met Johnny and June at the Opry for the first time. Johnny was walking down the hall and he said, \u201cHi, Trisha.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was like, \u201cWait a minute, Johnny Cash knows my name.\u201d They lived out near me when I lived in Hendersonville and they were always so nice to me. They would have jerked me sideways if I was not nice to somebody. [laughs] But that job\u2026 I was kind of shy, I wasn\u2019t aggressive about wanting to be a singer. I knew that that\u2019s what I wanted, but I wasn\u2019t\u2026 I don\u2019t know, I just wasn\u2019t bold enough to tell people what I wanted to do.<\/p>\n<p>But being a receptionist at the label, I watched everybody come in every day and do what I wanted to be doing. They were living their dream and I was answering the phone. I mean, I can be loud and I can be a ham, but I\u2019m generally shy. People who know me well don\u2019t believe that\u2019s true, but it isn\u2019t the easiest thing.<\/p>\n<p>You know, singing is easy and I loved being a demo singer because I was in a studio with maybe a couple of guys and a microphone. So there was some fear of the unknown, but I look back and think about that \u2013 they never made me feel like they were scared for me. They always made me feel like they were excited and that they wanted me to follow my dreams.<\/p>\n<p>When I would call home from Nashville, I would say, \u201cOh, I sang a demo for Harlan Howard today, he\u2019s a legendary songwriter.\u201d And they would say, \u201cEvery step you take is a step in that right direction.\u201d They always encouraged me. She\u2019s superhuman, you know. She can sing anything. And I am a confident singer, so when I tell you that she can sing circles around me, that is not a statement of humbleness. When there\u2019s a really strong, stand-out, high harmony, there\u2019s a handful of people who can do it, but nobody can do it like her. Nobody can sing up that high, with that much power, and still feel warm and not hurt your ears.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s got an amazing gift, and I don\u2019t think she realizes it, which is what makes me love her so much. She\u2019s so humble. I know you don\u2019t extend that invitation to just anybody.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, I also know these artists are busy, so I always preface it with, \u201cHey, if you can\u2019t do this, or if you don\u2019t love the song, you won\u2019t hurt my feelings. I totally understand if you can\u2019t. And if you can, I\u2019d love for you to do that.\u201d I always want to give them an out. Because I know Kelly loves me, I\u2019ve sung with her before, but if she just can\u2019t do it because of her schedule, I don\u2019t want her to feel bad. So that\u2019s my first thing, to give them an out.<\/p>\n<p>The only person I didn\u2019t give an out to was Garth. [laughs] I was like, \u201cYou\u2019re gonna have to do this!\u201d And I didn\u2019t just go into this album thinking, \u201cI\u2019m going to have my husband sing on the record.\u201d This song he\u2019s singing on, \u201cWhat Gave Me Away\u201d \u2014 it\u2019s about him. It\u2019s about that person who has your number and I couldn\u2019t imagine anybody else singing it but him. Does that song remind you of your dad?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yeah. And that showcases what a great writer Ashley McBryde is because the song is very personal to her. It\u2019s about her dad. And every daddy\u2019s little girl I\u2019ve talked to who\u2019s heard the song gets so emotional about it. You know, we all find our dads in there, and I think that\u2019s the mark of a really great songwriter who can translate their very personal feelings into something that makes us all relate to it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You must think about your dad every day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I do. I think about them both a lot. We were in my hometown [for a record release party] and they raised me there, but the whole town raised me, and so I just felt their presence so much there because I\u2019m like, they would be all over this. They would be having the best time.
