A grass fire at a residence on County Road 627 endangered three structures on the property.<\/strong>

Fire crews contained a half-acre grass fire near Walden Hollow on County Road 627 Sunday afternoon, narrowly avoiding structure damage.<\/p>\n

Grand Fire responded to two calls of smoke in the area about a mile and a half up County Road 627 off US Highway 34 at 12:15 p.m., according to Schelly Olson, assistant fire chief of Grand Fire.<\/p>\n

The fire started when the person staying at the residence on the property dumped coals from the fireplace into the front yard, Olson said. She noted that the dry and windy conditions contributed to the coals sparking the grass.<\/p>\n

Olson said the fire never got larger than a half acre, but it was a mile from the border of the Arapaho National Forest and got close to the three structures on the property.<\/p>\n

Though the flames got within a few feet of the residence, the fire was contained before the house or the other two structures on the property were damaged.<\/p>\n

Olson said the fire was contained at around 2 p.m. after crews dug handline and laid hoses around the perimeter. At around 4 p.m., crews were mopping up the last of the hot spots, Olson added.<\/p>\n

No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries occurred.<\/p>\n

Grand Fire was assisted by Grand Lake Fire, the Grand County Sheriff\u2019s Office, the Lone Peak Hot Shot crew, the U.S. Forest Service and the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control.<\/p>\n
