I just can\u2019t believe how we just can\u2019t have a little more light and a little more love. So, I\u2019m going to make it my business to try to do songs that are more uplifting \u2014 not just all Christian-based songs but songs that are just about better things. An upcoming track called \u201cThere\u2019s Jesus\u201d is on the way too. And she\u2019ll be performing a faith-based medley during this year\u2019s CMA Awards. (Of course, Dolly fans will know that this is the 30th anniversary of her \u201cHe\u2019s Alive\u201d performance on the show, which was then filmed at the Grand Ole Opry House. We got a blessing out of it.)<\/p>\n<p>During the press conference, she reminisced about her first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry when she was 13 years old. \u201cI just have so many memories,\u201d she reflected, \u201ceven as a child, a young person watching the people backstage, and standing out there on that stage where all the great people stood, just thinking maybe someday I would be part of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B3iridZHhxW\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"12\"><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sure enough it happened in 1969, a cornerstone of her international stardom. Though she spoke at length about her time on The Porter Wagoner Show, her career truly flourished when she stepped away from that syndicated series to pursue a solo career. She conceded that she wasn\u2019t able to make her quota of appearances when those were still required, and admits that she even offered to be dropped from the cast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter I started getting more famous, I wasn\u2019t able to like come to do my shows twice a month that\u2019s required. And I kept saying to them, \u2018You don\u2019t have to keep me on as a member, if you don\u2019t want to because I\u2019m not holding up to my contract. I want to get there. I want to do it,\u2019\u201d she recalled. \u201cBut they said, \u2018No, no, no, you\u2019re out there talking about us every day. Admittedly hoarse from talking all day, Parton nonetheless was able to mention her co-hosting duties on the CMA Awards, her upcoming Netflix specials, the holiday re-airing of Dolly Parton\u2019s Coat of Many Colors, the opening season for Dollywood next year, and a 2020 Christmas musical she\u2019s written the music for and starring in. In addition, she\u2019ll be recording some solo footage at the Ryman Auditorium to incorporate into the upcoming NBC special airing November 26, celebrating this landmark year.<\/p>\n<p>During her Opry performance, he sang seminal hits like \u201cJoshua\u201d and \u201cJolene,\u201d then brought out one of Porter Wagoner\u2019s most revered band members, Buck Trent, for a rendition of \u201cThe Carroll County Accident.\u201d At one point, she hopped on a stool to play dulcimer and remarked that the audience would now understand why she was wearing a pantsuit instead of a skirt \u2013 a style choice that prevented her from \u201cshowing my box office,\u201d she quipped.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B3kAH31nqPo\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"12\"><\/blockquote>\n<p>Certainly, Dolly\u2019s comic chops are a part of Opry history, too. During the press conference, she spoke about Speck Rhodes, the comedian on Porter Wagoner\u2019s show, as well as the Opry\u2019s most famous comedian, Minnie Pearl. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMinnie Pearl was a dear friend of mine and she was a very classy lady, Parton said. \u201cShe was very intelligent, very educated, but she put on that whole garb, with her little hat, just so she could do that corn country comedy that people love \u2014 because this is about country people. People back home working on the farms, and milking their cows, and they love laughing. They love to have something to listen to, to laugh about and the type of humor that they understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B3iLX1yHfJw\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"12\"><\/blockquote>\n<p>She added, \u201cFor most country people, and certainly entertainers like myself, I think comedy is part of our being, because it\u2019s what helps you remember the hard times growing up. We make more fun of stuff that you shouldn\u2019t even laugh at, but that was funniest stuff to us because we were trying to find the humor in it. \u2026 I grew up in a family where my dad\u2019s people were absolutely hysterical. My mom\u2019s people too. So, I get that from them. We\u2019re just naturally funny \u2014 <i>we<\/i> think!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even now, Parton\u2019s mind often goes wandering back to the seasons of her youth. During her set she sang her beloved early singles, \u201cMy Tennessee Mountain Home\u201d and \u201cCoat of Many Colors.\u201d She joked that when the royalties came in for \u201cCoat of Many Colors,\u201d she offered to buy her mother a mink coat. Her mother replied, \u201cWhere am I going to wear a mink coat?\u201d and simply asked for the money instead.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B3cxvJonR0H\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"12\"><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMy daddy loved the Grand Ole Opry so we had to listen to it back home, and me dreaming of being on it, and I remember that being special. But then the night that I actually became a member, after I was on Porter Wagoner\u2019s show, and got to actually be member 50 years ago this year, it was one of the highlights of my whole life because it was a true dream of mine and I just wish mom and daddy could be here tonight \u2014 but I think they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her country crossover hits \u201c9 to 5\u201d and \u201cHere You Come Again,\u201d Parton closed her first set with \u201cI Will Always Love You.\u201d It capped a night of Dolly classics performed by Bill Anderson (\u201cBut You Know I Love You\u201d), Candi Carpenter (\u201cLittle Sparrow\u201d), Toby Keith (\u201cKentucky Gambler\u201d), and Lady Antebellum (\u201cIslands in the Stream\u201d).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B3h6I-gn-Ly\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"12\"><\/blockquote>\n<p>During the press conference, she noted, \u201cAll these friends coming and stepping forward to share this night with me just makes it more special to me. But it\u2019s kind of a dream-like thing. You never know what\u2019s going to happen to you in your life. You never know if your dreams are going to come true, and if they do, you wonder how people will remember you when you\u2019re older \u2014 and now I\u2019m older. And I\u2019m seeing how people are going to remember me and that makes me feel very humbled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She continued, \u201cI\u2019m just very honored that I\u2019m still around, not only to just get to accept this, but I can actually perform and get out there and still do what I love to do, and maybe I\u2019ll be around another 50 years, who knows?
