CRAIG \u2014 Craig Councilman Brian MacKenzie officially tendered his resignation after his arrest on three child-sex related felonies, two Craig council members confirmed late Thursday.<\/p>\n

Councilmen Paul James and Steven Mazzuca said Thursday they had received and accepted MacKenzie\u2019s letter of resignation, which might have been sent electronically.<\/p>\n

The Craig Press issued a Freedom of Information Act request Tuesday asking for any email from Councilman Brian MacKenzie sent to city staff since his election in April but has not received an official response yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m glad he submitted it,\u201d Mazzuca said in a phone interview Thursday. \u201cIt makes things a whole lot less painful for the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

If MacKenzie hadn\u2019t resigned, James signaled he would prepare a recall petition. But MacKenzie\u2019s resignation prevents the need for a recall.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that was the good choice,\u201d James said of MacKenzie\u2019s resignation. \u201cIn my opinion, it was probably the only choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though it\u2019s an option under the Craig City Charter to hold an election to fill the seat, in a statement Tuesday, City Manager Peter Brixius said council would be moving to appoint someone to MacKenzie\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt sounds like that\u2019s the direction everyone is going,\u201d James said. \u201cFor one thing, an election would probably cost $25,000. So, there\u2019s that. Not only that, it would take more time and we need a full council \u2026 There has to be an odd number so we can have tie-breakers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mazzuca said he\u2019s looking forward to progressing and continuing the work of council.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully we can all move on from this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

James said he still feels like MacKenzie betrayed the people and their trust.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt caught us all by surprise. That\u2019s for sure,\u201d James said. \u201cI hate to see this. I feel like we\u2019re making good moves for the city. We\u2019re working to offset the problems we\u2019re looking at economically, and I think we\u2019re doing a good job of that. I just don\u2019t want the actions of one individual to sway people from that. We want people to trust us\u2026We are here working for the people. I definitely feel like that was a betrayal of our trust.\u201d<\/p>\n
