Captions<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Middle Park boys soccer coach Dane Ruttenberg shaved his<br \/>\nbeard Saturday for the second time in 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>About 10 years ago, the coach recalled, he was trimming his<br \/>\ngoatee, went a little too far and had to shave it all off. The result was one of<br \/>\nhis children punched him while the other stormed out of the room in a fit of rage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family does not like me clean shaven,\u201d Ruttenberg<br \/>\nsurmised.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, the soccer coach had another run-in with the clippers, though it was no accident this time around.<\/p>\n<p>With Middle Park\u2019s 5-0 shutout victory over Aspen in Granby,<br \/>\nthe boys tied the school record for most wins in a regular season at 10, and their<br \/>\nreward \u2014 an extension cord running to a set of clippers on the sideline \u2014 awaited<br \/>\nthem after the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComing into the year, I knew this team was special,\u201d Ruttenberg<br \/>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s been with the program since its creation in 1996 and said<br \/>\nhe knew \u2014 with 12 seniors on the roster \u2014 this year could be one for the books.<br \/>\n\u201cBut when you don\u2019t have a history of success, it can be hard for the players<br \/>\nto believe it,\u201d the coach continued, as he explained he wanted to incentivize their<br \/>\nsuccess.<\/p>\n<p>With that, Ruttenberg said he asked his team after the Lake<br \/>\nCounty game, a contest the Panthers won 5-1, what they wanted from him if they<br \/>\nmade it to the state tournament this year. Their answer was a good shave for<br \/>\nthe coach.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018So I said, \u2018OK, I\u2019ll shave my beard,\u2019\u201d Ruttenberg recalled<br \/>\nbefore adding one caveat to the deal. \u201cAnd then I increased it (on Saturday) by<br \/>\nsaying, \u2018OK, now you\u2019re going to do it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And so the Panthers took turns one by one removing the<br \/>\ncoach\u2019s beard swipe by swipe after defeating Aspen. As the trimming progressed,<br \/>\nso too did the funny styles on the coach\u2019s face, until finally he took over and<br \/>\nfinished off the job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey earned it,\u201d the coach said. \u201cThey worked really hard<br \/>\nthis season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the year, Middle Park has dominated many of its opponents<br \/>\nin the team\u2019s 10 wins. The Panthers have also fought through some close<br \/>\ncontests, securing 3-2 victories over KIPP Denver Collegiate and Bruce Randolph,<br \/>\nwhile suffering a couple heartbreaking losses, none tougher than 1-0 in double<br \/>\novertime vs. Arrupe Jesuit.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Ruttenberg saw the Panthers show amazing heart in that<br \/>\nloss, and overall he said he\u2019s been superbly impressed by the boys\u2019 perseverance<br \/>\nthis year. Technically, the team may have stumbled at times, but the coach has<br \/>\nnever once thought his boys have shown a lack of effort.<\/p>\n<p>The season\u2019s not over yet. The Panthers will look to break<br \/>\nthe school\u2019s record for most wins in a regular season with two more games on<br \/>\nthe road. If Middle Park wins out, which Ruttenberg believes his team can do,<br \/>\nthe Panthers could end the season 12-3 with the team hosting the school\u2019s first-ever<br \/>\nstate playoff game at home.
