Something that I probably wanted to write for a long time. But I always believe that songs come to you when they\u2019re ready to be written. This one came this past spring,\u201d he says, \u201cand it just kind of kept coming to the top of the water.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B37DvnIlA4t\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"12\"><\/blockquote>\n<p>Before you listen to the song, let\u2019s back up for a minute. <\/p>\n<p>First, there was Nail\u2019s song about his father Dennis who was a high school band director at Kennett High School in Missouri. \u201cOld Man\u2019s Symphony,\u201d from his 2016 <em>Fighter<\/em> album, was a tune Nail penned himself, about trying to be as good as his dad was when it came to music. But it\u2019s still a welcome addition, because Nail hasn\u2019t released a country song as a solo artist since 2016\u2019s collaboration with Brothers Osborne, \u201cGood at Tonight.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>This one is touching, heartbreaking, and has the kind of honesty that might take your breath away: for Nail, or anyone you\u2019ve ever known who has struggled with mental health, depression and anxiety. Until now, Nail\u2019s never had a song about the heavy topic. Especially not hers. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I knew what the song would be,\u201d Nail told me of what was on his mind when he picked up the guitar the day he wrote it. \u201cBut I\u2019ve learned in the moment to sort of remove my initial emotions, and just follow the story. It wasn\u2019t until afterwards, when I listened back, that I realized the gravity of the message. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the \u2019storm\u2019 in the song represents a lot of things. And as we recorded it, I began seeing it in many ways. I felt like it was almost like a soldier going off to war. Saying, \u2019If I don\u2019t make it back, mother, I love you!\u2019 For me personally,\u201d he added about the lyric \u2019if I don\u2019t make it out this storm,\u2019 \u201cthe storm is the daily battle. So for me, it was, \u2019Mother, if I don\u2019t ever return to the son you knew me as, before this battle mentally began, it\u2019s not your fault. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just who I was born to be.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"author\">\n<div class=\"description\"> Alison makes her living loving country music.
