Great Happenings in East Grand Schools the week of Dec. 12.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Five MPHS band students were in Grand Junction this weekend. They were selected to perform in the Best of the West Honor Band at Mesa State University Dec. 6-7. They are Emily DePlata on flute, Max Gurrola on trumpet, Danny Rios-Castillo on flute, Paddy Aither on flute and Hank Grissom on tuba.<\/p>\n

\u2022 France 2020 is sponsoring dinner and a movie Dec. 20 at Middle Park High School. It will be $10 for a spaghetti dinner with cr\u00eapes for dessert, and the movie \u201cJoyeux No\u00ebl.\u201d Dinner is set for 6 p.m. and the movie will be shown at 7 p.m. Did you know that the French program travels to France every other year? Summer 2020 is our next trip, come support our students on this grand learning adventure.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Students in grades K-5 at GES participated in the worldwide event of Hour of Code during technology classes Dec. 9-13. This event allowed students of all ages to learn coding and experience computer science on and off devices.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Fifth grade students have finished up their Chuck Close portrait project. This is always one of the staff\u2019s and students\u2019 favorite artworks to look at on display at GES. The young artists did an amazing job learning how to use a grid and different types of pencils to do the shading.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Wow! I am beyond excited that we have every law enforcement agency represented with our high school outreach sponsored by the Middle Park Booster Club. Thank you for being on board with this. I think it will be amazing! Our goal is to bring together community members, students and our law enforcement. This will allow the public to see law enforcement in a different light.<\/p>\n

\u2022 The annual Vitalant Blood Drive sponsored by the eight members of the National Honor Society was Dec. 5 in the library at Middle Park High School. Twenty-eight donors gave an hour of their time to donate, and 20 of the donors were first time donors. Every unit of blood saves three lives, so 84 lives will be saved.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Kindergarten, first and second grade students put on an adorable holiday performance on Monday. Third, fourth and fifth graders had their holiday performance this Thursday. Minnesingers are singing for our senior citizens at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Granby community center. Minnesingers will also be singing at Granby Ranch at 2 p.m. Dec. 21. Lastly, Granby Elementary will host its annual craft and caroling day on Dec. 19. Look for us caroling around town.<\/p>\n

\u2022 This weekend, the MPHS cheer team competed at state and placed seventh out of 19 teams. This is a moment stamped in Middle Park history. Congrats, girls!<\/p>\n

\u2022 One of the goals of the Entrepreneurship Club at Middle Park High School is to connect students with local businesses. To this end, the club visits several different local entrepreneurs to learn about the process of opening a business, maintaining clientele and creating a successful product. In November, the club met with Jayson Harris and Austin Gray of Green Spaces and The Perk. During this meeting, students discussed an idea of opening a mobile coffee cart at the high school. Gray and Harris then informed the students that they had a mobile cart already built, and would be willing to offer the students an opportunity to use their cart to get their business started.<\/p>\n

Last Friday, students pitched a profit-sharing idea at the co-working space, and are now working towards a goal of opening their business. The goal is to have students run the mobile coffee cart before and after school as well as during sporting events. With a functioning business, the students will learn everything from scheduling and management to finances and marketing. There is even a discussion of building an online ordering platform where parents can order a coffee and get it delivered to their car as they drop students off for school.<\/p>\n

\u2022 On Monday, Grand County Commissioner Richard Cimino visited students during their government class. In preparation for this visit, students researched the county\u2019s budget and made a proposal on where they believed tax dollars should be allocated. Ideas ranged from providing veteran services and building a Granby recreational center to sponsoring a local festival and providing county residents with an augmented income.<\/p>\n

After the presentations, Cimino discussed with the students how the county budget is created and provided some explanation on the function of special districts in Colorado. This opportunity gave students a glimpse into the county\u2019s finances and an introduction into the upcoming political issues that will be at the forefront of the 2020 election.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Fourth and fifth graders at Fraser Valley Elementary began working on creating the yearbook. There are more than 30 students participating in yearbook club this year, and we\u2019re looking forward to working together to create a wonderful book of memories.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Grand County History and Our Community, Our Stories, had the pleasure of learning from Joe Kelley. In total, around 40 students got to hear Grand County history from a historian to utilize this firsthand knowledge in their research. Thank you, Joe Kelley from Powerworld, for sharing historical stories with our class. And thank you, Shanna Ganne with the Grand County Historical Association, for sharing materials for our research.<\/p>\n
