While we often talk about how they are so much more, you may not think of libraries as your go-to place for artwork.

However, the library is a great place to not only create art in one of our programs or check out museum passes, but also view works of art. For Grand County Library District, we regularly showcase the work of both acclaimed and budding artists in the community rooms at the Granby, Fraser Valley, and Kremmling libraries.

GCLD holds the view that the public library has a role in sharing information and promoting creativity. Erinn Batykefer, co-founder of the Library as Incubator Project, perhaps said it best in a 2016 interview with Library Journal: “Visible art in the library space, whether through gallery shows, public art or performance, or hands-on workshops, is incredibly important … a space where the right conditions for creative thought and new ideas are protected and promoted.”

For new artists, our library’s displays are a great opportunity to gain experience in showcasing their artwork. We are proud that our libraries are inviting spaces where artists can take their creative expression from their own home or studio into a public space and the community’s home — the local library.

These displays also allow for artists to gain business experience as it provides them with exposure, marketing, and the opportunity for sales (though sales do need to take place off library property). We can display various forms of art including photography, painting, mixed media, and more. Artwork is displayed for approximately one month, but has the potential to move to another library branch to reach a different community within the county.

Young artists are included, too. Our Fraser Valley and Granby Libraries are proud hosts of school district art shows. On occasion, you can view a showcase of young artists’ LEGO creations at the Fraser Valley and Kremmling libraries. Young builders have such pride and huge smiles knowing they will be featured as they carry their creations to the showcase. We are thrilled to foster the creativity of these potential future engineers and artists.

If you would like your art displayed at one of GCLD’s branches, please contact your local library branch.

via:: Sky-Hi News

The Grand County Library District offers a venue for local artists to display their work.
