But he wouldn\u2019t hear of it. <\/p>\n<p>In a new <em>Cowboys &amp; Indians <\/em>interview with Travis and his wife, together they tell the story of what has and hasn\u2019t worked for him throughout his recovery. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was too much. It took him a while,\u201d Mary says during the interview at their ranch outside of Tioga, Texas. But finally, when Travis was about eight months post-stroke, he was willing to listen to his songs. First up was \u201cHe Walked on Water,\u201d Travis\u2019 1990 ballad from the pen of songwriter Allen Shamblin.<br \/>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eCVw8Qjeg84<br \/>Now, even though Travis still suffers from aphasia \u2014 a kind of brain damage that robbed him of his ability to use words \u2014 he can understand everything happening around him. So when the Travis\u2019 go to Nashville for meetings, take part in media interviews, or make appearances for his memoir <em>Forever and Ever, Amen: A Memoir of Music, Faith, and Braving the Storms of Life<\/em>, he can take it all in. <\/p>\n<p>And Mary explains that that\u2019s what works wonders. \u201cWe like to be out here,\u201d she says. \u201cWe like for him to be touched and loved on.\u201d Connecting with fans, mostly, sounds like it has been the best way for his legendary voice to live on. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still singing.
