{"id":20982,"date":"2020-01-16T09:26:56","date_gmt":"2020-01-16T16:26:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.skyhinews.com\/?p=62535"},"modified":"2020-01-16T09:26:56","modified_gmt":"2020-01-16T16:26:56","slug":"grand-county-opposes-reintroduction-of-wolves-in-colorado","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/krky\/local-news\/grand-county-opposes-reintroduction-of-wolves-in-colorado\/","title":{"rendered":"Grand County opposes reintroduction of wolves in Colorado"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.skyhinews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/07\/66175759_2426131467449665_7000920434782765056_n.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.skyhinews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/07\/66175759_2426131467449665_7000920434782765056_n.jpg 640w, https:\/\/cdn.skyhinews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/07\/66175759_2426131467449665_7000920434782765056_n-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\"><figcaption><strong>CPW officials investigated a reported gray wolf sighting in Jackson County, as well as one in Grand County.<\/strong><br \/><em>Courtesy of Colorado Parks and Wildlife<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Citing the potential harm to ranchers and outdoor recreation, Grand County commissioners are opposing a state ballot measure that, if approved, would reintroduce wolves in Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>The Board of Grand County Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday stating the county\u2019s opposition to reintroducing gray wolves in the Western Slope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can tell you that I\u2019ve received phone calls and emails and text messages from people all over the state \u2026 and I\u2019ve received zero calls saying we should support more wolves,\u201d said Commissioner Merrit Linke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully, (the resolution is) a document the public can use, because it does have a lot of information in it and facts cited, when they make their decision at the ballot box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the reasons commissioners oppose the reintroduction of wolves is they believe wildlife and land management decisions should be made by professionals and experts.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution notes that Colorado Parks and Wildlife previously passed resolutions opposing wolf reintroduction in 1982, 1989 and 2016, as well as in the agency\u2019s wolf management recommendations adopted in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaking fish and wildlife decisions by the ballot is a peculiar thing,\u201d said County Attorney Chris Leahy.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioners also stated their opposition to any plan that would harm products from the forest, energy, tourism, hunting, agriculture or outdoor recreation in the county.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution specifically cited the \u201cinevitable conflict\u201d ranchers and outfitters will face if wolves are reintroduced to the region and a concern for tourists and outdoor recreators sharing space with an apex predator.<\/p>\n<p>Money also factored into the commissioners\u2019 opposition because it\u2019s unclear what funding would be available for livestock losses.
