Great Happenings in East Grand Schools the week of Feb. 7.<\/p>\n

\u2022 The Fraser Valley Elementary second grade classes have just completed an eight week \u201cSuperhero\u201d training program. In this program, students learned how to use their superpowers of empathy and compassion to make and strengthen friendships, improve school climate, prevent bullying behaviors and improve one\u2019s self image and self respect and generally be a happier person. We challenge everyone to \u201cCape Up\u201d and use your superpowers of empathy and compassion.<\/p>\n

\u2022 The Ski-A-Thon was a pure success. Hats off to our VIPs who organized the event. The creativity, organization and fun they integrated into the event was top notch. Please give all our VIPs and especially Jamie White (Brownlee\u2019s mom) and Katie Jensen (Castin\u2019s mom) a pat on the back. We are so lucky to have such involved and caring parents. Also Peter Butrimovich from the town of Granby is responsible for making and maintaining the course. He was out there for hours each day regrooming the course and even helping the kiddos on skis. Sherry Kent from Drive By Pie also came over and filled a special niche with some of those kids who were reluctant to ski. She\u2019s amazing and also has a huge heart and a passion for teaching kids. BTW, her pies are amazing! And thanks again to the first grade team for feeding all our volunteers. It was amazing to come inside from the cold and get a little boost of energy for the next class.<\/p>\n

\u2022 FVE and Granby fifth-graders trained all day on Feb. 5 in preparation for their annual trip to AmeriTowne in Denver all day on Feb. 12.<\/p>\n

\u2022 EGMS Computer Class: Sixth-graders are working on their Frogger programming, learning computational thinking patterns that can be used in many ways. Seventh-graders are starting to learn about circuits. They are using an arduino board to make simple circuits and will program them to turn on and off. Eighth-graders are learning how to program the NAO robots and will start programming the NAO to read and move to a children\u2019s book.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Mr. Birdseye and Mr. Williams at MPHS had Joy Rondeau come and speak to the strength class and the sports health class about her experience as a Paralympian at the 2018 PyeongChang Paralympics. She was part of the USA Nordic Skiing and Biathlon team. She mainly focused on her training and the process athletes go through for Olympic drug testing, as we had just completed our unit about doping in sports for sports health.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Fifth-graders at FVE have been learning about slavery. We read a primary source of a slaveholder\u2019s diary, read books about Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, and many others. Students went on a simulated journey on the Underground Railroad and recorded the big events. They will be writing their own diary entries, and they\u2019ll create freedom quilts to show their journeys.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Fraser Elementary\u2019s fifth grade art classes are helping Habitat for Humanity of Grand County by decorating birdhouses. These adorable houses will be offered for sale at our Birds of a Feather event on March 6. We are thrilled and thankful for the support of these young people and their teacher. Their creativity and hard work will be turned into funds, which will help our mission of providing affordable housing in our community. We hope that they will carry this spirit of giving into adulthood, and will become pillars of our fine community.<\/p>\n
