{"id":23203,"date":"2020-06-03T17:50:21","date_gmt":"2020-06-03T23:50:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.skyhinews.com\/?p=65102"},"modified":"2020-06-03T17:50:21","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T23:50:21","slug":"grand-gathers-in-support-of-george-floyd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/krky\/local-news\/grand-gathers-in-support-of-george-floyd\/","title":{"rendered":"Grand gathers in support of George Floyd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About 40 people gathered Tuesday at US Highway 40 and County Road 804, holding signs that read \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d and \u201cSilence is Violence\u201d on the second night Grand County residents showed up to support the protests across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Fraser resident Quinn Hildebrandt said she was inspired to do something locally after seeing protests against police brutality and racism around the state and U.S. following the death of George Floyd, a Minneapolis man who died as a police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Hildebrandt posted to Facebook that she would be out at the intersection near Safeway from 5:30-7:30 p.m. every night this week to show support for the national protests. She wasn\u2019t sure if she would end up being the only one, but she felt compelled to act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPersonally, I\u2019m pretty fed up with the state of the world today, and I\u2019ve been sitting at home for two months, so I\u2019ve got nothing better to do,\u201d Hildebrandt said. \u201cIt\u2019s about solidarity and letting people of color in our own community know that they\u2019ve got allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\" readability=\"6\">\n<div class=\"row shn-donation shn-donation-mobile p-0\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.skyhinews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/shn-logo-2x-wht.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.skyhinews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/shn-logo-2x-wht.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"handleDonationButtonClickMidArticle()\">Donate<\/button><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The first night, Hildebrandt guessed, around 30 people participated and she was happy to see the gathering gaining traction, including with the mayor, who saw the Facebook post and decided to join.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a pretty great response,\u201d she said. \u201cI love that the mayor\u2019s here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fraser Mayor Philip Vandernail joined the group on both Monday and Tuesday with his family to show support for the message. On Facebook, he shared his pride in Fraser with some photos from the gathering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad my family can go out and support in times like these,\u201d Vandernail wrote. \u201cBe peaceful in your protests and be kind as a human.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The message of solidarity and support resonated with many who showed up with signs, including Fraser resident Grant Culver.<\/p>\n<p>Culver said he saw the call to action on Facebook and decided to join because he felt it was important to do more than just talk about police brutality and racism on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to make my voice heard and find others who support this,\u201d Culver said. \u201cUp here, it\u2019s hard to see things like that, so people scoff because our police aren\u2019t like that, but like my sign says \u2014 injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere, whether you\u2019ve been personally affected or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the group of people stood around the intersection, passing cars honked in approval with a few drivers pumping their fists or raising peace signs out their windows.
