His first success as a songwriter came in 1967 when Del Reeves took his \u201cA Dime at a Time\u201d to No. 12 on the <em>Billboard<\/em> charts.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first of a deluge of high-ranking songs, among them Reeve\u2019s \u201cGood Time Charley\u2019s,\u201d Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton\u2019s \u201cHolding on to Nothing,\u201d Johnny Cash\u2019s \u201cOney,\u201d Hank William Jr.\u2019s \u201cPride\u2019s Not Hard to Swallow\u201d and Elvis Presley\u2019s \u201cT-R-O-U-B-L-E.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tall and stately, Chesnut was easily spotted in a crowd by his white, ornately decorated cowboy hat.<\/p>\n<p>Writing almost exclusively by himself, Chesnut saw his songs recorded by Ray Price, Waylon Jennings, Roy Clark, Elvis Costello, Jimmy Dean, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Travis Tritt, B. J. Thomas, Tom Jones, Eddy Arnold, Commander Cody, NRBQ, Mel Tillis, Pat Boone and dozens of others.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in 1971, Chesnut\u2019s dry wit and comic timing earned him a series of appearances on the nationally syndicated <em>Hee Haw<\/em> variety show.<\/p>\n<p>He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1996.<br \/>No funeral arrangements have yet been announced.<\/p>\n<div class=\"author\">\n<div class=\"description\">Edward Morris is a veteran of country music journalism.
