{"id":1302232,"date":"2019-01-09T11:01:30","date_gmt":"2019-01-09T18:01:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/?p=442110"},"modified":"2019-01-09T11:01:30","modified_gmt":"2019-01-09T18:01:30","slug":"boulder-based-face-rocks-the-vilar-center-at-beaver-creek-with-vocals-only","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kske\/local-news\/boulder-based-face-rocks-the-vilar-center-at-beaver-creek-with-vocals-only\/","title":{"rendered":"Boulder-based FACE rocks the Vilar Center at Beaver Creek with vocals only"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_442114\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-442114\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-325x244.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-325x244.jpeg 325w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-150x113.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-1240x930.jpeg 1240w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-620x465.jpeg 620w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-600x450.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">FACE, the Boulder-based vocal band, took the stage on Tuesday night at the Vilar.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>FACE does what so many vocal bands can&#8217;t: create a sound as fulfilling and well-rounded as a band with instruments does.<\/p>\n<p>Human voices obviously don&#8217;t have the power of, say, an electric guitar \u2014 if they did, we wouldn&#8217;t have electric guitars \u2014 but FACE tries its hardest, and on Wednesday at the Vilar Performing Arts Center at Beaver Creek, the group didn\u2019t disappoint.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/facevocalband.com\/\">The Boulder-based group of five men<\/a> started in 2001, performing on the Pearl Street Mall, collecting tips in a hat before competing on NBC\u2019s reality series \u201cThe Sing-Off.\u201d Today, FACE has not only toured across the country\u00a0but has also played in Sweden and Australia, as well as becoming the first vocal band to ever headline Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison.<\/p>\n<p>Dedicated largely to rock music, FACE played a number of recognizable tunes like Blondie&#8217;s &#8220;Call Me&#8221; and Maroon 5&#8217;s &#8220;Harder to Breathe,&#8221; but they also deviated from the genre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Pink Panther Theme\u201d was performed \u2014 certainly a feat, as the song contains no vocals, and that\u2019s all FACE does have.<\/p>\n<p>A country song worked its way into the mix with Florida Georgia Line&#8217;s &#8220;Meant to Be,&#8221; and &#8220;From Now On&#8221; from &#8220;The Greatest Showman&#8221; brought in a poppy show tune.<\/p>\n<div id=\"single-mid-script\" class=\"p402_hide\">\n<h2>Recommended Stories For You<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As if that weren&#8217;t eclectic enough, the quintet threw in a mashup of &#8220;Jessie&#8217;s Girl&#8221; and &#8220;Stacy&#8217;s Mom,&#8221; and a medley of &#8217;80s hits such as &#8220;Take On Me,&#8221; &#8220;Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,&#8221; &#8220;Billie Jean&#8221; and more.<\/p>\n<p>And that was just the first half.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_442115\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-442115\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-2-325x171.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-2-325x171.gif 325w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-2-150x79.gif 150w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-2-768x405.gif 768w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-2-1240x654.gif 1240w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-2-620x327.gif 620w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-2-600x317.gif 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">FACE is the first vocal band in history to headline a performance at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The second half offered rock staples like \u201cHouse of the Rising Sun\u201d and \u201cYou Give Love a Bad Name,\u201d as well as a rendition of \u201cDevil Went Down to Georgia\u201d with lyrics adjusted to tell the story of vocal percussionist Mark\u00a0Megibow\u2019s beatboxing show with a contemporary twist. Interestingly enough, the song was mashed up with Michael Jackson\u2019s \u201cThriller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FACE also performed \u201cHallelujah,\u201d a song that they happened to be preparing when composer Leonard Cohen passed away, before wrapping up the show with \u201cUptown Funk.\u201d While there\u2019s something funny about seeing several grown men sing Bruno Mars, it was clear that each member was having a blast.<\/p>\n<p>Other songs from the second half of the show included \u201cHooked on a Feeling\u201d by Blue Swede and Imagine Dragon\u2019s \u201cThunder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The set list, ranging from Crosby, Stills &amp; Nash to modern artists like Maroon 5, proved that not only are the members of FACE well-versed, but they\u2019re also talented enough to move through several decades (and even genres) of music.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_442116\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-442116\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-1-325x244.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-1-325x244.jpeg 325w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-1-150x113.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-1-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-1-1240x930.jpeg 1240w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-1-620x465.jpeg 620w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FACE-VDN-011019-1-600x450.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mark Megibow of FACE demonstrated his beatboxing skills during a personalized rendition\u00a0of \u201cDevil Went Down to Georgia.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In an encore, the group performed \u201cParting Glass,\u201d and Ed Sheeran deep cut that has become their most watched music video online.<\/p>\n<p>Each member of the group was talented, but percussionist Megibow was certainly a standout, not only offering jaw-dropping beatboxing, but also having some of the best vocal chops in the group. Not to mention, Megibow had the best stage presence \u2014telling jokes, dancing around and making the show fun as a whole.
