The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHFM) in Leadville will present Spirits in the Shaft, a wine, beer and whiskey tasting event on Feb. 8, from 6 to 9 p.m.<\/p>\n
This after-hours event will include the opportunity to explore all 25,000 square feet of exhibit space within the museum while tasting offerings from 10 Colorado vintners, brewers and distillers along with culinary bites from local chefs. A new temporary exhibit opening, a presentation on Moroccan wines, a psychic medium and of course, a silent auction should make for fun night at the museum.<\/p>\n
Attendees will have an exclusive first look at NMHFM’s new temporary exhibition Sequencing Through Time and Place: The Carissa Mine. Sequencing Through Time & Place is a collaborative effort of artists Wendy Lemen Bredehoft, Susan Moldenhauer and Margaret Wilson\u2014mixed media artist, photographer and dancer\u2014who explore how artists perceive, respond to and express place (in this case, The Carissa Mine) through different expressive lenses. The exhibit features interpretive dance, mixed media assemblage and photography as mechanisms for understanding the past life of the Carissa Mine, a historic gold mining site in South Pass City, Wyoming. The trio has worked together on prior projects in London and Venice.<\/p>\n
Moroccan wine<\/p>\n
In addition to our featured wineries, breweries and distillers, Heady Red (also known as Christine Whittington) will explore wines of Morocco. With the recent resurgence of excellent wines from the region, Whittington recently traveled to Morocco to experience its wine, food and culture. She sought out wine at a hidden area known as “The Cave,” toured the Domaine Zouina Vineyard in the Guerrouane AOG (Guaranteed Appellation of Origin) in the Mekn\u00e8s and F\u00e8s regions, and experienced exquisite wine and food pairings in Casablanca.<\/p>\n
Morocco has seven wine regions containing fourteen AOGs and two AOCs (Controlled Appellation of Origin). Most Moroccan vineyards are in the foothills of the coastal Atlas Mountains. The relatively high altitudes and the cooling effect of the nearby ocean preserves acidity in grapes and help create balanced wines. Finding and getting these wines is elusive due the country’s restrictions on advertising and access. Whittington will pour several wines including from Ouled Thaleb, the oldest winery in Morocco located in the Zenata region along the Atlantic coast appellations between Casablanca and Rabat and from Domaine Zouina in the heart of Guerrouane country, the biggest wine region of Morocco.<\/p>\n
Whittington is a Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) through the Society of Wine Educators and is a member of the Colorado Association of Viticulture and Enology (CAVE).<\/p>\n
The psychic<\/p>\n
