{"id":1302588,"date":"2019-01-18T12:46:50","date_gmt":"2019-01-18T19:46:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/?p=443380"},"modified":"2019-01-18T12:46:50","modified_gmt":"2019-01-18T19:46:50","slug":"prodigies-stun-at-beaver-creek-recording-of-nprs-from-the-top","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kske\/local-news\/prodigies-stun-at-beaver-creek-recording-of-nprs-from-the-top\/","title":{"rendered":"Prodigies stun at Beaver Creek recording of NPR\u2019s \u2018From the Top\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>National Public Radio is known for its podcasts, including \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fromthetop.org\/\">From the Top<\/a>,\u201d an episode of which was recorded at the <a href=\"https:\/\/vilarpac.org\/\">Vilar Performing Arts Center<\/a> on Wednesday night. \u201cFrom the Top\u201d is a program featuring talented young musicians, giving them a large platform to share their art with the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that voices of young artists need to be heard loud and clear,\u201d said a member of the show\u2019s staff. \u201cArt is about hope and empathy \u2026 it has the power to unify people of all beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The show, which is hosted by pianist Peter Dugan, welcomed violinist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/entertainment\/the-creative-clever-and-talented-charles-yang-takes-on-hosting-the-celebrated-npr-radio-showcase-from-the-top-at-the-vilar\/\">Charles Yang<\/a> as a co-host. Yang is an internationally touring musician and songwriter that got his start after performing on \u201cFrom the Top.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_443129\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-443129\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/CharlesYang-VDN-011619-1-325x217.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/CharlesYang-VDN-011619-1-325x217.jpg 325w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/CharlesYang-VDN-011619-1-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/CharlesYang-VDN-011619-1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/CharlesYang-VDN-011619-1-600x401.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charles Yang co-hosted NPR\u2019s \u201cFrom The Top\u201d at the Vilar in Beaver Creek. Peter Dugan also served as co-host.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This particular episode featured five young artists, each playing a different instrument. Once they played their music, Yang and Dugan would briefly interview each of them about their love of music and their personal lives.<\/p>\n<p>The show kicked off with 16-year-old violinist Charlotte Marckx. She played\u00a0&#8220;Carmen Fantasie&#8221; by Franz Waxman with Dugan accompanying her on the piano. The song has been popularized by film and television. After her performance, Marckx discussed her love of moving people with music.<\/p>\n<p>Next came Benjamin Lee, 16, playing the erhu. The erhu is an instrument often referred to as the \u201cChinese violin,\u201d despite the fact that the erhu is centuries older than the violin. Lee walked the audience through the unique instrument itself, explaining that it mimics the human voice as to express emotion. The live audience also had the opportunity to enter to win \u201cFrom the Top\u201d merchandise as the show began.<\/p>\n<p>Scott Quirk, 17, took to the stage next. Quirk is a flutist and played \u201cIII. Salmon Lake\u201d\u00a0 by Daniel Dorff \u2014 a song about Dorff\u2019s childhood living on the shore of a lake. Quirk then discussed his popular flute-themed Instagram account (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/scott_quirky\/?hl=en\">@scott_quirky<\/a>) and its surprising success with over 4,500 followers.<\/p>\n<p>Next came Denver native Gwyneth Aggeler, 15. Aggeler, a classical guitarist, played \u201cI. India\u201d from \u201cLibra Sonatine\u201d by Roland Dyens. Aggeler then discussed her exploits in teaching middle school-aged boys how to play guitar, explaining that they often prefer to use their instruments as weapons.<\/p>\n<p>The final performer to take the stage was 16-year-old pianist Marc Soong. Soong played a paraphrase on \u201cFigaro&#8217;s Aria\u201d from &#8220;Barber of Seville&#8221; by Grigory Ginzburg.
