The Huskies went into Glenwood Springs and knocked off the Demons, 55-44, on Friday night and sit atop the 4A Western Slope with a 4-0 mark. And, yes, that’s six wins in a row for Battle Mountain.<\/p>\n
These ladies are really in uncharted territory as the last time the Huskies started league play 4-0 is \u2026 well, we’ll get back to you on that.<\/p>\n
“Being on the road is always tough,” Huskies coach Kindi Backstrom said. “It’s also finals week, so we couldn’t teach much. We went with some good drills and tried not to overload them. Everyone did a great job tonight.”<\/p>\n
The Huskies trailed 22-20 at the half but rallied for their first win in Glenwood since Jan. 30, 2016. In that win three years ago, a freshman named Claire Krueger had 14 points. Now a senior, Krueger had 15, as did sophomore Gabby Caballero. Alden Pennington and Ariana Lopez both chipped in with seven each.<\/p>\n
There is no rest for the Huskies. Having handed the Demons their first league loss, Battle Mountain is at Rifle today.<\/p>\n
In scheduling news, the Battle Mountain girls’ and boys’ games that were snowed out at Steamboat Springs earlier this month are now set for Feb. 6 up north. The day before, the Huskies face the Sailors in Edwards.<\/p>\n
KREMMLING \u2014 Vail Christian girls’ basketball pressed its way to a 42-23 win at West Grand on Friday night.<\/p>\n
“We played well as a team,” Saints coach Cynthia Robinson said. “Our press worked really well. It was fun to have that energy.”<\/p>\n
Mari Engleby led the defense with seven steals. That led to a balanced attack with Sarah Heredia with 12 points. Zoey Barela had 11 and Grace McCurdy 10 for Vail Christian (6-6 overall and 2-3 in the 2A Slope).<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Vail Christian’s boys set up their showdown with DeBeque today by downing the Mustangs, 65-59.<\/p>\n
Alec Moritz led the way with 18 points, while Zack McKeever had 15. E.J. Koller added 16 points as the Saints moved to 8-4 and 5-0.<\/p>\n
Vail Christian hosts DeBeque at 4 and 5:30 p.m. and the boys’ game will give the winner the outright lead in the 2A Slope.<\/p>\n
“We’re pumped,” Saints coach Sheldon Kuhns said. “We didn’t overlook West Grand. Honestly, getting this one on the road is big. I’m proud of the guys.”<\/p>\n
GRAND JUNCTION \u2014 Jesse Moser and Eagle Valley boys’ basketball beat Grand Junction at the buzzer for a 56-54 win at Grand Junction on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Carlos Quezada fed Moser for the game-winner with 1 second left.<\/p>\n
Tony Hernandez had another double-double for the Devils (6-8) with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Xaver Johnson was also a big factor in the paint, finishing with 14 points.<\/p>\n
Eagle Valley returns to conference play with a rematch with Battle Mountain on Tuesday in Edwards.<\/p>\n
