His mother attended art classes, and he\u2019d spend time pouring over her textbooks, and once he got to school, his teacher took special note of his talent and encouraged him to enter contests, leading him to win scholarships to the Columbus College of Art and Design.<\/p>\n<p>Hicks\u2019 art would eventually become known for depicting realistic scenes, snapshots of everyday life \u2014 a couple kissing, chefs working in a kitchen, a conductor leading his orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>However recently, Hicks has taken a more abstract approach to his art, which he\u2019ll be displaying at Vail International Gallery beginning\u00a0on Saturday, Feb. 16.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to sort of play with abstract, non-objective worlds and realism, to strike a harmonious balance between disciplines and place them on canvas or boards I paint on,\u201d Hicks said. \u201cI\u2019m really concentrating on shape, texture and\u00a0edges, more so than more tangible things in previous works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new art style comes from Hicks\u2019 desire to paint for himself. His previous work began as a collaboration, in which he\u2019d pass a piece back and forth with another artist until they had a complete work of art. He continued to paint in the style of the project. Eventually, however, Hicks chose to take a turn and paint for himself.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_446396\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-446396\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Art-VDN-021119-1-219x325.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"219\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Art-VDN-021119-1-219x325.jpeg 219w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Art-VDN-021119-1-101x150.jpeg 101w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Art-VDN-021119-1-768x1138.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Art-VDN-021119-1-837x1240.jpeg 837w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Art-VDN-021119-1-419x620.jpeg 419w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Art-VDN-021119-1-600x889.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/www.vaildaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Art-VDN-021119-1.jpeg 1350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ron Hicks\u2019 new body of work was inspired by his desire to create art for himself, rather than for the masses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m open and free to express myself in this way, and I hope to keep it as pure as I can,\u201d Hicks said. \u201cI\u2019m doing it for myself as opposed the masses.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"single-mid-script\" class=\"p402_hide\">\n<h2>Recommended Stories For You<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hicks has had a 12-year relationship with Vail International Gallery, displaying art since the gallery\u2019s beginning, thanks to President and co-founder of the gallery Marc LeVarn\u2019s affinity for his work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew going in that he was an artist that we wanted to feature,\u201d LeVarn said.<\/p>\n<p>Although the work that will be on display is different than what LeVarn has displayed before, he has no concern about the exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re really excited about this new style for Ron,\u201d said LeVarn. \u201cHe has succeeded in evolving in a way that&#8217;s really successful visually and artistically, the emotional content of the paintings is really powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Catch Hicks art at Vail International Gallery between Saturday, Feb. 16, and March 2. Hicks will be present to discuss his work from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16.
