ARE, Sweden (AP) \u2014 Of all the people flying in to attend Lindsey Vonn\u2019s final race \u2014 her dad and two siblings, U.S. Ski Team top brass and even Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark \u2014 one very significant other will be missing.<\/p>\n

P.K. Subban, Vonn\u2019s boyfriend and a defenseman for the NHL\u2019s Nashville Predators, has a game to play in Tennessee on Sunday hours after Vonn bids skiing goodbye in the downhill at the world championships in Sweden.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would\u2019ve liked to be there for that and celebrate with her,\u201d Subban told The Associated Press. \u201cI\u2019ve got to do the best I can to support her from afar.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this season, when Vonn was out recovering from another in a long line of knee injuries,\u00a0Subban kept Vonn\u2019s spirits up<\/a>\u00a0when she couldn\u2019t even bear to watch a ski race.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a great thing that I have such an upbeat boyfriend,\u201d Vonn said. \u201cHe runs around in a pajama suit making me laugh and that takes my mind off of things. He\u2019s just always positive and happy and maybe a little too energetic at times. But it definitely helped me mentally to be in Nashville and be around him and not focus so much on skiing but just getting healthy and working as hard as I can.\u201d<\/p>\n

After divorcing from retired skier Thomas Vonn, Vonn dated\u00a0Tiger Woods<\/a>\u00a0and then\u00a0NFL coach Kenan Smith<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She and Subban went public with their relationship in June when they walked the red carpet together at the CMT Music Awards in Nashville. Then on July 4th, Subban tweeted\u00a0a photo of him and Vonn<\/a>\u00a0wearing the same U.S.-flag themed women\u2019s bathing suit, asking \u201cwho wore it better?\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the biggest personalities in hockey, Subban \u2014 or \u201cthe Subbanator\u201d as he is nicknamed \u2014\u00a0hosted a TV special<\/a>\u00a0after the NHL\u2019s All-Star Skills competition last month, featuring him telling jokes in an opening monologue, talking with some guests and some taped segments.<\/p>\n

He also started a digital series called \u201cThe P.K. Project\u201d to give viewers a look at his personal life. On the first episode,\u00a0he had Vonn on a video call while visiting his family<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 revealing that he\u2019s not the only one in the relationship who goes by initials, with his mom referring to \u201cthat lovely L.V.\u201d<\/p>\n

Subban \u201chas no idea about ski racing,\u201d said Vonn, the women\u2019s record holder with 82 World Cup wins, trailing only the overall record of 86 held by Stenmark.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve kind of tried to watch some video with him and he has absolutely no clue. He\u2019s like, \u2018I\u2019ll be honest, I don\u2019t care about skiing, I just care about you.\u2019 And that\u2019s kind of cute but it\u2019s kind of annoying at the same time. But I don\u2019t know much about hockey. All I know is forecheck. I don\u2019t even know what that means, really.\u201d<\/p>\n

While it may seem strange that Vonn, who grew up in the hockey hotbed of Minnesota, knows so little about her boyfriend\u2019s sport, she says it\u2019s a result of the Minnesota North Stars\u2019 move to Dallas in 1993.<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up pretty much my whole childhood not having a hockey team,\u201d Vonn said. \u201cSo just because I\u2019m from Minnesota doesn\u2019t mean I should know hockey.\u201d<\/p>\n

So which team does Vonn, who was living in Colorado when she started dating Subban, support? The Colorado Avalanche or Subban\u2019s Predators?<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Colorado. Well, I mean that\u2019s the hard part,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I moved to Colorado I watched the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup and I\u2019ve been to a lot of Avalanche games but I can\u2019t really say anything other than Nashville.\u201d<\/p>\n

Can Subban ski? \u201cI think he can snowboard but that\u2019s it,\u201d Vonn said, adding that she has no plans to take him out on the slopes and endanger his career. \u201cOh no. He\u2019s got a job to do. I\u2019m not taking any risks on that one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Does Vonn skate? \u201cOh yeah. I\u2019m from Minnesota.\u201d<\/p>\n

One other thing that Vonn and Subban have in common is Olympic gold medals.<\/p>\n

Vonn won the downhill at the 2010 Vancouver Games and Subban, who is from Toronto, was on Canada\u2019s team that won the hockey tournament at the 2014 Sochi Games.<\/p>\n

And they both compete in the cold.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wear my jacket in the stadium,\u201d Vonn said. \u201cHe could have played tennis, or an indoor sport that was actually warm, that would have been helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n

The day after Vonn retires, she will fly to Nashville to see Subban \u2014 and begin her new life as a professional hockey fan.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be there like every time now. It will be fun,\u201d she said. \u201cThey got two new players the other day, everything looks great for them: Try to get the division title and go for the Stanley Cup. So I\u2019ll be there cheering them on.\u201d<\/p>\n
