The rules are simple: Strap a barstool to a pair of skis and ride it down a hill.<\/p>\n

The Minturn barstool races will return on Saturday, March 9, to raise money for the Minturn Community Fund, which contributes to the town\u2019s summer concert series, among other things.<\/p>\n

Each year, teams gather in Minturn \u2014 this year, near Little Beach Park \u2014 to race down a hill on, as the name suggests, a barstool.<\/p>\n

One such team \u2014 made up of Earl Bidez, Kory Headly and Spencer Whitlock \u2014 has been at work preparing to defend its reigning first-place title.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe mostly made it out of scraps we had lying around,\u201d said Whitlock, the self-dubbed \u201cwinningest \u2018NASBAR\u2019 racer in history,\u201d of his team\u2019s creation. The barstool was purchased for about $15, and the skis were found in a trash can. The team estimated that less than $50 is spent on the creation.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s all in a name<\/h2>\n

In addition to \u201cstrapping a stool to a pair of skis,\u201d as Bidez refers to it,<\/p>\n

teams decorate their sleds. This year, Bidez\u2019s team is going by \u201cWhere Did You Get Those Coconuts?\u201d \u2014 but aside from the team name, they\u2019re keeping everything else a secret.<\/p>\n

While their stool has yet to be decorated, the infrastructure is in place, and the skis have firmly been attached to the stool using only minor tools, a process that took only 30 minutes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThirty minutes with a six-pack, an hour and a half without,\u201d Whitlock joked.<\/p>\n

The event is split into two competitions: the barstool race (judged on speed) and the race known as \u201cAnything Goes,\u201d which judges racers on their \u201cstyle\u201d and \u201cpanache.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anything Goes allows riders to race down the hill on \u2026 anything. As long as it slides, it counts, and there\u2019s no limit to the number of riders.<\/p>\n

Each team also must prepare a pit crew to put the sled back together if it suffers a crash.<\/p>\n

Not only is Where Did You Get Those Coconuts? the reigning champ, but its members are feeling confident about this year\u2019s festivities.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel bad for everyone else, but I think we have a good chance of winning,\u201d Whitlock said. \u201cIt\u2019ll basically be a fight for second.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bidez and Whitlock built their sled in their shop at Custom Audio Video in Minturn, a space that Whitlock noted is perfect for the occasion.<\/p>\n

The sleds are often made with cheap materials such as recycled skis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s full of crap, just like the day we made (the sled),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Regardless of where the sleds are made and who wins the races, Bidez noted that it\u2019s all in good fun and that raising money for the Minturn Community Fund is a good cause. However, he noted that he\u2019s looking forward to the \u201cApres Stool Celebration,\u201d which will feature the award ceremony and drinks at an as-of-yet undecided Minturn bar.<\/p>\n

\u201cBarstool Races are perfect for Minturn,\u201d said Cindy Krieg, with the Town of Minturn. \u201cOur community prides itself on its authenticity. There is nothing pretentious about Minturn, and we like our events<\/span> to match that quality. Grassroots, down to earth, and community focused \u2013 that’s how I would describe most of our events<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Checks can be dropped off at the Minturn Town Hall or mailed to the Town of Minturn at PO Box 309, Minturn, CO, 81645.<\/p>\n
