They knew the title started with an &#8220;A&#8221; and some thought it was Aladdin. They did have that first letter correct.<\/p>\n<p>They arrived at Annie as they continue to focus on family shows. It works for them at several levels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;More kid-friendly shows attract families and also encourages kids to become involved in theater,&#8221; said Andrea Grewe, who is Annie to her very marrow. &#8220;Singing songs about hope really is wonderful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hans Taagen is Daddy Warbucks from the top of his head to the spats on his shoes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"single-mid-script\" class=\"p402_hide\">\n<h2>Recommended Stories For You<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Warbucks debates taking her \u201cunder his wing\u201d because he doesn\u2019t know much about children. He quickly learns.<\/p>\n<p>For Taagen it&#8217;s Daddy Warbucks&#8217; paradigm shift from logical to emotional, from &#8220;New York City,&#8221; to &#8220;Something Was Missing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Grewe prepared tirelessly, from studying dozens of performances, to singing through &#8220;Tomorrow&#8221; until there was no tomorrow, to showing up for her audition dressed like Annie, right down to the hair. She looks and sounds like you think Annie should.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I want something I put my mind to it and go after it,&#8221; Grewe said.<\/p>\n<h2>Jazz hands, sparkle fingers<\/h2>\n<p>Eagle Valley students Tanner Essex and Caroline Dewell created the choreography, which was wonderful and challenging \u2013 but mostly wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have to make sure we&#8217;re completely clear,&#8221; Dewell said.<\/p>\n<p>They both work with the Vail Academy of Dance and the Vail Performing Arts Academy, and applied what they learned to creating choreography for Annie.<\/p>\n<p>They planned, they designed the choreography, they put in the work and it&#8217;s going to be great.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Throw in some jazz hands and sparkle fingers, smile and sell it,&#8221; Dewell said.<\/p>\n<p>Pat Sheehy&#8217;s music department provides live music with an orchestra.<\/p>\n<h2>About Annie<\/h2>\n<p>For those living in a parallel universe, Annie is a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Broadway_theatre\">Broadway<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Musical_theatre\">musical<\/a> based on the popular <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harold_Gray\">Harold Gray<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Comic_strip\">comic strip<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Little_Orphan_Annie\">Little Orphan Annie<\/a>, with music by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Strouse\">Charles Strouse<\/a>, lyrics by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Charnin\">Martin Charnin<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Musical_theater\">book<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Meehan_(writer)\">Thomas Meehan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The original Broadway production opened in 1977 and ran for nearly six years, setting a record for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neil_Simon_Theatre\">Neil Simon Theatre<\/a>. It launched numerous productions in many countries, as well as national tours, and won the Tony Award for Best Musical.
