Glenwood squared off with Aspen in a friendly local match-play competition at the 9-hole course.<\/strong><br \/><em>Provided<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Looking to keep things light Wednesday, the Glenwood Springs Demons and Aspen Skiers girls golf teams kicked off what they hope to be an annual event as the two local teams met up at the Ranch at Roaring Fork for a local friendly match play competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">At the Par-3 Ranch at Roaring Fork course, Glenwood topped Aspen 4-2, winning the inaugural event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The two programs are planning on making this an annual 9-hole match play event with the winning team keeping the trophy each year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Against Aspen, Glenwood senior Lisa Kelley defeated Aspen\u2019s Zoe Guthrie 1-up in extra holes, while teammate Maggie Friemel defeated Aspen\u2019s Avery Hirsch 1-up in nine holes. Glenwood\u2019s Maddie Riley defeated Aspen\u2019s Hailey Higdon 1-up, while Glenwood\u2019s Katelyn Brennan defeated Aspen\u2019s Maddie Madril 2-up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">For Aspen, Julia Higdon defeated Glenwood\u2019s Emma Price 4-up, while Tessa Guthrie topped Kyley Fishman 6-up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Following the friendly match-play tournament at Ranch at Roaring Fork, the two programs now head to their 3A and 4A regional tournaments on Monday in hopes of qualifying for the state tournament. Aspen travels to Gunnison for the 3A regional tournament, while Glenwood travels to Adobe Creek for the 4A regional tournament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Subhead\">WSL TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">On Day One of the 2019 Western Slope Multi-League track and field championships Friday at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction, a number of local athletes got off to a fast start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">For Glenwood, senior Henry Barth broke the school record in in the 3200m run that was previously set two weeks ago by teammate Gavin Harden. Barth ran a 9:34.96, winning the league championship in the event while breaking Harden\u2019s school record by six seconds. Harden placed second in the event, clocking a time of 9:42.91, giving the Demons a 1-2 finish in the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Staying in 4A, Glenwood senior Sequoia Kellogg placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 4-08.00. Senior Payten Spencer claimed a league championship in the pole vault for the Demons, clearing a height of 9-6.00, winning the event by six inches, before then placing fourth in the shot put with a distance of 30-04.00, helping the Glenwood girls get off to a strong start in the two-day meet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Glenwood girls sit third after one day in the team standings with 29 points, while the men sit third with 21 points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In 3A, Grand Valley distance runner Katherine Stark started the two-day meet in strong fashion for the Cardinals, claiming third place in the 3200m run in the 3A Western Slope League race, clocking a time of 13:06.72.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In the men\u2019s 800m, Coal Ridge\u2019s Gustavo Archila pocked up a win for the Titans, finishing ahead of Roaring Fork\u2019s Ronald Clemente in second place. Archila clocked a time of 2:03.39, while Clemente finished in 2:04.91.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In the girls\u2019 3A WSL 800m race, Grand Valley\u2019s Jordyn Pittman picked up a league-championship win, finishing in 2:22.19, more than two full seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In the high jump, Coal Ridge\u2019s Marin Simons won the event with a height of 5-02.00, while Grand Valley\u2019s Shaya Chenoweth won the 3A WSL long jump with a distance of 17-09.75, winning by more than a full foot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Coal Ridge\u2019s Colby Hoffman won the league\u2019s pole vault championship, clearing a height of 11-06.00, while teammate Phoebe Young won the women\u2019s pole vault championship, clearing a height of 10-07.00, finishing ahead of Rifle teammates Ashley Manera and Emilee Demann in second and third.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Closing out the first day in the 3A WSL, Rifle\u2019s Duke Brady finished second in the men\u2019s shot put with a distance of 45-01.00, while Coal Ridge\u2019s Taylor Wiescamp and Taylor Roberts finished second and third in the shot put for the girls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">At the conclusion of the first day, the Coal Ridge girls sit second behind Delta in the team standings with 34 points, while Grand Valley (fourth, 26 points), and Rifle (sixth, 24 points) are in the hunt as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">For the boys, Coal Ridge sits second behind Gunnison with 32 points, while sits tied for fourth with 14 points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Tagline\"><a href=\"mailto:jcarney@postindependent.com\">jcarney@postindependent.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/sports\/preps\/prep-roundup-glenwood-girls-golf-tops-aspen-in-friendly-match-play-at-ranch-at-roaring-fork-glenwoods-barth-breaks-school-record-in-3200m-at-wsl-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Post Independent<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Glenwood Springs golfer Maddie Riley reacts after a shot Wednesday at the Ranch at Roaring Fork.
