{"id":1310119,"date":"2019-05-09T19:05:04","date_gmt":"2019-05-10T01:05:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/?p=977882"},"modified":"2019-05-09T19:05:04","modified_gmt":"2019-05-10T01:05:04","slug":"roaring-fork-high-a-low-point-in-district-staff-survey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kske\/local-news\/roaring-fork-high-a-low-point-in-district-staff-survey\/","title":{"rendered":"Roaring Fork High a low point in district staff survey"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"427\" height=\"151\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/06\/schoolshvac-gpi-120815.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/06\/schoolshvac-gpi-120815.jpg 427w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/06\/schoolshvac-gpi-120815-150x53.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/06\/schoolshvac-gpi-120815-325x115.jpg 325w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\"><figcaption><strong>Roaring Fork High School<\/strong><br \/><em>Hal Williams Photography Inc. |<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Teachers and staff in the Roaring Fork School District view their schools positively overall, according to a survey conducted in March, with one notable exception.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/10ZUXLZIugGBD1keUArXfzhRKFKz4QyVb\/view\">Roaring Fork High School<\/a> in Carbondale received the lowest scores of the three area high schools.<\/p>\n<p>Certified staff members (teachers and others whose job in school requires certification) were asked a series of questions to measure their individual school\u2019s culture, strategic initiatives, community partnerships and academic excellence.<\/p>\n<p>In nearly every measure, RFHS ranked far below the district average.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/05\/RFSD-overall-results.png\" alt class=\"wp-image-977883\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/05\/RFSD-overall-results.png 637w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/05\/RFSD-overall-results-300x243.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 637px) 100vw, 637px\"><figcaption><strong>Overall results of a staff survey of Roaring Fork School District employees in five categories of questions. \u201d From spring 2019 RFSD survey.<\/strong><br \/><em>RFSD overall results<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s no secret that teachers at RFHS and some in the Carbondale community have been critical of current Principal Brett Stringer.<\/p>\n<p>Stringer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/roaring-fork-principal-brett-stringer-resigning-effective-at-end-of-school-year\/\">announced<\/a> April 4 that he would step down as principal at the end of the academic year, noting in a letter to parents that his \u201ctransition into this community has not been easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite low favorability in nearly every category, a majority of RFHS teachers still said they would recommend the school as a good place to work (60 percent), and a good place for students to learn (79 percent).<\/p>\n<p>That was still below the districtwide averages for the same question.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the district, 85 percent of staff surveyed said they would recommend their school as a good place to work, and 92 percent would recommend their school as a good place for students to learn.<\/p>\n<p>The lowest ranking category for RFHS was academic excellence, with 21 percent answering survey questions around that category favorably.<\/p>\n<p>Three survey questions in that category touched on:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The balance of \u201cinstructional, collaborative and preparation time\u201d in the school\u2019s schedule (8 percent favorable);<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 How often data is used to improve student learning (23 percent favorable); A total of 26 teachers and staff at RFHS answered the survey.<\/p>\n<h4>Crew less effective in high schools<\/h4>\n<p>At all three high schools \u2014 Roaring Fork, <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1_dHT9PbJA1FrnS-OiZ-uLwOPB5InwrVL\/view\">Glenwood Springs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/170Qsf4UAfR3_QkhhjL-2sFcCG1vGVWbt\/view\">Basalt<\/a> \u2014 some of the lowest results on the survey had to do with professional development and the benefits of what\u2019s known as Crew.<\/p>\n<p>Crew is a dedicated time of day where students meet in small groups, supervised by an adult, and focus on developing character skills, what the district refers to as \u201cHabits of a Scholar,\u201d and \u201csocial-emotional learning and academic goal-setting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout all district schools, 53 percent of staff surveyed answered favorably that Crew \u201c(enhanced) academic goal-setting, character development and positive school culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Within high schools, however, teachers appear to have a less favorable opinion of Crew than the districtwide average. At both Roaring Fork and Glenwood Springs high schools, 24 percent responded favorably.
