Even if an ordinance is passed neither alternative forms of transportation would be permited on the main thoroughfare U.S. 6.<\/strong><br \/><em>Kyle Mills \/ Post Independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">New Castle residents appear open to allowing golf carts and off-highway vehicles (OHV\u2019s) on the town\u2019s streets following a recent open house meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe overall consensus was in favor of golf carts and OHV\u2019s,\u201d Mayor Art Riddile said of the comments from the June 6 open house. \u201cIf several letters of opposition are entered into the equation, I\u2019d say its 59 percent for and 41 percent against.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Riddile said that he would like to hear other councilors thoughts at the regularly scheduled June 18 City Council meeting before taking a formal position on the matter himself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe questionnaires used during the open house gave residents the ability to comment on a number of different questions related to golf carts and OHV use,\u201d Town Administrator David Reynolds said. \u201cStaff has passed the comments to Council for their review. \u2026Overall, [the] staff observed that there were more residents in favor of the idea than residents who were opposed to the idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">While Council does retain the authority to allow golf carts and off-highway vehicles (OHVs) on the town\u2019s streets, no such ordinance could permit either alternative form of transportation on one the town\u2019s main thoroughfares, U.S. 6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">New Castle Police Chief Tony Pagni said that ultimately it was a Council decision but did mentions two concerns of his own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cMy concerns were, one, licensed operators operating the vehicles and then, two, proper insurance and vehicle registration on those vehicles,\u201d Pagni said in an interview Friday. \u201cCouncil hasn\u2019t decided either way. They are going to continue to contemplate this issue. And when they do, they set precedence and then we figure out how we go about making it enforceable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThere will be a discussion at our next Council meeting regarding the direction we will take,\u201d Riddile said of Tuesday\u2019s upcoming Council meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. in town hall (450 W Main Street).<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">At that meeting Council may decide to direct staff to draft an ordinance, table the discussion for the time being in favor of more public outreach or abandon the idea altogether.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cPeople seem to be well informed and have ideas about both the advantages and the disadvantages,\u201d Town Councilor Bruce Leland said of the ongoing discussion. \u201cWe will be sure to publicize widely if we do decide to consider an ordinance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Tagline\"><a href=\"mailto:mabennett@postindependent.com\">mabennett@postindependent.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/local\/golf-carts-and-ohvs-on-new-castles-streets-gains-traction-in-community-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Post Independent<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Town officials say a majority of New Castle residents are in favor of golf carts and off-highway vehicles (OHV\u2019s) on town\u2019s streets.
