{"id":1311714,"date":"2019-06-22T21:08:00","date_gmt":"2019-06-23T03:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/sunshine-and-strawberries\/"},"modified":"2019-06-22T21:08:00","modified_gmt":"2019-06-23T03:08:00","slug":"sunshine-and-strawberries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kske\/local-news\/sunshine-and-strawberries\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunshine and Strawberries"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"364\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/06\/StrawberryParade-gpi-062319-4.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/06\/StrawberryParade-gpi-062319-4.jpg 620w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/06\/StrawberryParade-gpi-062319-4-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"><figcaption><strong>Parade goers are pelted with water while sitting on the sidewalk of Grand Avenue during the 122nd annual Strawberry Days Parade on Saturday morning.<\/strong><br \/><em>Chelsea Self \/ Post Independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">With a chill in the air, parade entries and floats lined up along Ninth Street in downtown Glenwood Springs early Saturday morning for the annual Strawberry Days Parade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Less then a block away, a slow trickle of cautious parade-goers began lining Grand Avenue an hour before the start, with the wrath of Mother Nature Friday evening on opening day of the festival still fresh on their minds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">As the start time approached, the clouds parted and the sun lit up the downtown corridor with a warm glow for Glenwood visitors to bask in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt is nice to get everybody out here, I love having a beautiful day like today, so everyone can come out to see the different businesses,\u201d Glenwood Springs resident Chris Spence said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Spence, who lives just a block off of Grand Avenue, has been coming to the parade and festival for more than 20 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s fun to come out and see everybody, watch all the floats and groups come through, and just enjoy it,\u201d Spence said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Spence said he also likes to go listen to the music, have a little dinner, and enjoy friends and camaraderie at the park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">For Violet Rippy, 13, of Glenwood Springs, and most children anxiously waiting for the parade, it is all about the treats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cMy favorite part about the parade is the candy and the strawberries of course,\u201d Violet said.\u201cMy grandma has a strawberry patch in the community garden, and right about now it is filled with ripe strawberries, so we bring them home and eat them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Violet enjoyed the parade with four siblings and her mom, DeeDee Rippy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s a fun community event,\u201d DeeDee said. \u201cMy husband grew up here, we have a lot friends come back to town, it is fun to see old faces and meet new faces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe always run into old friends, and the kids enjoy the activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Led by the Grand Marshals \u2014 Glenwood Springs\u2019 Class of 1955, who rode in two classic red convertibles \u2014 the 2019 edition of the parade made its way down Grand Avenue to the cheers of the crowd and echoes of children laughing as they clamored for candy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">For Glenwood resident Jim Ingraham, all the people and fun stuff to buy is his favorite part about the parade and festival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThank gosh the rain went away,\u201d Ingraham, who has been coming to the event for six years, said. \u201cI\u2019m part of the Rotary, and Sunday we do the pancake breakfast, I\u2019m usually in the park cooking pancakes; that\u2019s a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">With the temperature approaching 60 degrees, the sea of faces stretched over the mile long parade route from Ninth Street to Park Drive, just past Sayre Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Longtime Glenwood resident Zona Hays, has been coming to the Strawberry Days parade for decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI think I saw my first one in 1973,\u201d Hays said. \u201cIt\u2019s a tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Hays, who is a big fan of music, said that is her favorite part of the festival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">She was a little disappointed by this year\u2019s parade, and said she misses all the bands that used to take part.
