Gypsum\u2019s Keith Humerickhouse, shooting a 5-under-par 65, took the lead into the clubhouse in the championship flight during Saturday\u2019s opening round in the annual Glenwood Open Golf Tournament played on \u201cThe Hill\u201d in Glenwood Springs.<\/p>\n

Humerickhouse, a former Glenwood Open winner, is followed in second place by Tyler Bishop of Denver, who carded a 68 on day one of the 92-player tournament. Humerickhouse and Bishop were the only players on the day who dipped under the par 70 of the 9-hole layout. At 71 strokes and in third place in the top flight, is last year\u2019s Open champion Dillon Washburn of Glenwood.<\/p>\n

Another former Open champion, Kirk Blaszyk of Glenwood, finds himself leading the first flight of golfers after carding a sizzling 1-over-par 71. Blaszyk is the assistant superintendent at the Glenwood Golf Club after spending several years in the same capacity at Aspen Glen. Brian Vigil trails Blaszyk after shooting a 73. River Valley Ranch general manager Red Cunningham and Glenwood\u2019s Dave Sorel are tied for third place heading into Sunday\u2019s deciding day with 76\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Blaszyk\u2019s boss, longtime Glenwood course superintendent Jim Richmond, posted a score of 77 on Saturday for all others in the second flight to chase. Richmond will have to contend with Josh Berns (78) and New Castle\u2019s Mark Barlau (80) in the flight\u2019s top pairing on Sunday.<\/p>\n

A couple of twins from Rifle, Hugo and Miguel Mondragon sit in first and third place in the tournament\u2019s third flight. Hugo signed off on his scorecard that read 78, while Miguel shot an 80. In between the two youngsters in second place stands Glenwood\u2019s Jeff Austin who had a steady day with a 79.<\/p>\n

Glenwood\u2019s Jim Otto and Robert Fuller share the lead at 83 strokes in the tourney\u2019s fourth flight. Ron Stevens carded an 86, with Clint Chappell and Dan Jarosz close behind at 88.<\/p>\n

The Open\u2019s fifth and final flight, which is a net score category, is led by Todd Saunders who had a 63 after his handicap was figured into his 18-hole total. Glenwood\u2019s David Vanderhoof is in second place with a score of 68. One shot behind at 69 is Glenwood resident Red Woolley.<\/p>\n

One of the more colorful characters at this year\u2019s Open, among many, is 72-year-old Max Martinez of Grand Junction, who carded a very respectable 89 score in the tourney\u2019s third flight. Martinez, who carries a 14-handicap and has played in tournaments on the western slope spanning several decades, vowed to make a final day charge on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to go low tomorrow (Sunday). I know I am. I can just feel it,\u201d Martinez said as he relaxed on the scenic deck of the course clubhouse overlooking the Roaring Fork Valley. \u201cI may not win it, but I\u2019m going to move on a lot of guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

Course general manager Jerry Butler and assistant Jim Roy were impressed with the field of golfers this year at the Open and the condition of the picturesque golf course.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone was overwhelmed with the excellent condition of the course today,\u201d Butler said.<\/p>\n

Fifth flight golfers begin their tee times at 7:30am on Sunday morning, with the lower flights getting started in the afternoon.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a full day of good golf on Sunday at the Glenwood Open, and it\u2019s free to the public.<\/p>\n
