{"id":1312242,"date":"2019-07-09T15:56:17","date_gmt":"2019-07-09T21:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/?p=983463"},"modified":"2019-07-10T12:39:38","modified_gmt":"2019-07-10T18:39:38","slug":"president-of-glenwood-quarry-opposition-group-under-fire-for-rude-tweet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kske\/local-news\/president-of-glenwood-quarry-opposition-group-under-fire-for-rude-tweet\/","title":{"rendered":"President of Glenwood quarry opposition group under fire for rude tweet"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/07\/McKinney-GPI-070919-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption><strong>A mailer criticizes former Glenwood Spring&#8217;s mayor&#8217;s tweet.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Flyer<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Former Glenwood Springs Mayor Leo McKinney is taking fire from a mysterious dark money group for using a sexist word to describe the U.S. education secretary.<\/p>\n<p>Many Glenwood Springs residents received a mailer Monday attacking McKinney for a March 22 tweet in which he apparently referred to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos as a \u201cc-nt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mailer instructs people to \u201ccontact the Glenwood Springs Citizen\u2019s Alliance and ask them why they don\u2019t value women in Glenwood and the Valley.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"p402_hide\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-983465\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/07\/McKinney-GPI-070919-1-791x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption><strong>A mailer from week-old nonprofit criticizes former Glenwood Springs mayor\u2019s tweet.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Mailer<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>McKinney, president of the Citizen\u2019s Alliance, which organized to fight RMR Industrial\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/rmr-hires-lobbyists-for-quarry-expansion\/\">proposed expansion<\/a> of the Mid Continent quarry, apologized for using the term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI take full responsibility for using a very sensitive word that I shouldn\u2019t have used,\u201d McKinney said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have strong feelings about Trump\u2019s cabinet, but if I had used a different word I don\u2019t think anyone would have noticed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Citizen\u2019s Alliance accepted McKinney\u2019s apology and unanimously voted that he remains president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough we don\u2019t condone the use of this word, the Citizens\u2019 Alliance board\u00a0accepted the apology,\u201d said Sarah Gordon, Citizens\u2019 Alliance vice president. \u201cIn a unanimous vote, we upheld McKinney\u2019s position as board president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The special vote took place Monday, McKinney said, and the quorum was made up of three women and two men. McKinney said he recused himself from the vote.<\/p>\n<p>McKinney\u2019s Twitter posts are frequently critical of the Trump Administration, and during DeVos\u2019 confirmation hearing he referred to her as \u201can illiterate\u201d in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeoMcKinney\/status\/829058915665059840\">February 2017 tweet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The mailer was distributed by the Frontier Women\u2019s Job Council, which registered as a nonprofit corporation with the Colorado Secretary of State July 1.<\/p>\n<p>Katie Kennedy, the registered agent of the group, is connected to more than 100 campaign and political finance committees.\u00a0Kennedy did not return a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear whether RMR or anyone associated with RMR is directly associated with the Frontier Women\u2019s Job Council.<\/p>\n<p>RMR did not comment on whether they are associated with the Frontier Women\u2019s group. In a brief statement, a spokesperson for RMR who is apparently based near Los Angeles, said, \u201cThe subject\u2019s derogatory language toward women has no place in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know who\u2019s behind it,\u201d McKinney said, adding, \u201cI think the mailer speaks for itself. Those who see it are drawing their own conclusions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take this for what it is, which is an attempt by someone to discredit the Citizens\u2019 Alliance. Perhaps they fear the strength of the community and our organization,\u201d said Stephen Bershenyi, a board member for the Citizen\u2019s Alliance and also a former Glenwood City Council member.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a clumsy attempt to smear the Citizens\u2019 Alliance and to sway public opinion,\u201d said Gordon. \u201cWe are confident people will see through this, and will continue to stand with us in opposition to the strip mine proposal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McKinney\u2019s tweet first resurfaced online in June on political blog Colorado Transparency Project and Colorado Peak Politics.
