{"id":1312244,"date":"2019-07-09T18:11:06","date_gmt":"2019-07-10T00:11:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/?p=983380"},"modified":"2019-07-09T18:11:06","modified_gmt":"2019-07-10T00:11:06","slug":"community-to-get-its-say-about-proposed-sayre-park-improvements-at-thursday-open-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kske\/local-news\/community-to-get-its-say-about-proposed-sayre-park-improvements-at-thursday-open-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Community to get its say about proposed Sayre Park improvements at Thursday open house"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"730\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/07\/Sayre-GPI-071019-1024x730.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/07\/Sayre-GPI-071019-1024x730.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/07\/Sayre-GPI-071019-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/07\/Sayre-GPI-071019-768x547.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><figcaption><strong>10-year-old Derek Menjivar swings across the monkey bars at the playground in Sayre Park on Tuesday afternoon.<\/strong><br \/><em>Chelsea Self\/Post Independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Sayre Park, the home of Strawberry Days, has a few areas of low-hanging fruit that residents want refurbished, replaced and in some instances reimagined altogether.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the Sayre Park Master Plan project consultant team led by Zehren and Associates out of Avon, plans to unveil its preferred park improvement scenario at a community open house from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Glenwood Springs Community Center, located at 100 Wulfsohn Road.<\/p>\n<p>According to Pedro Campos, principal landscape architect and land planner for the firm, similar suggestions came from all walks of life for Sayre Park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have heard quite a bit from the community that they really love the park generally as it is today,\u201d Campos said of the feedback gathered from interviews, public meetings and a community survey. \u201cWe have tried to go for the low-hanging fruit; some of the improvements that will be really meaningful but won\u2019t fundamentally change the layout or uses within the park.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote p402_hide\" readability=\"3.5\">\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>\u201cWe have heard quite a bit from the community, that they really love the park generally as it is today,\u201d Campos said of the feedback gathered from interviews, public meetings and a community survey.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>TENNIS, PICKLEBALL AND BASKETBALL<\/strong><br \/>Campos explained that, out of all of Sayre\u2019s amenities, its tennis courts receive the least utilization. That\u2019s not because park users do not enjoy the sport, but rather due to the courts\u2019 poor surface conditions and surrounding fencing, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the consultant team has heard from avid pickleball players about the need for designated pickleball courts in Glenwood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of the fastest growing sports in the country,\u201d Campos said of pickleball. \u201cWe are going to show one of the two [tennis] courts being renovated into four pickleball courts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plan envisions new tennis and basketball courts, too, Campos explained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLAYGROUND EXPANSION<\/strong><br \/>Much of the feedback also zeroed in on the need to expand the park\u2019s existing playground in a way that creates appropriate areas for different age groups.<\/p>\n<p>A previous city press release called Sayre Park\u2019s playground \u201cobsolete\u201d and went on to say, \u201creplacement parts are no longer available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>SAVE THE SLEDDING<\/strong><br \/>According to Campos, sledding remains the top activity during the winter months in Sayre Park, and countless residents want the family-friendly activity prioritized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe heard that over and over again. So we said, well, we got to respect that and maintain it because it is a real important activity in town.\u201d Campos said of the sledding tradition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ACCESSIBILITY, STRAWBERRY DAYS AND SHADE<\/strong><br \/>Being home to the annual Strawberry Days Festival, the consultant team made clear its intentions to provide accessible routes throughout Sayre for senior citizens, parents pushing strollers and disabled park users.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stairs between the field and the lower bench \u2026 everyone seems to make it somehow or some way, but it is definitely an area that needs to be improved,\u201d Campos said.<\/p>\n<p>Campos went on to say how the consultant team was being mindful of existing shade and vegetation throughout Sayre Park.<\/p>\n<p>Following Thursday\u2019s community open house, Zehren and Associates will accept additional public comment before conferring with City Council about the preferred plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom this meeting and with a more detailed map we will start really drilling down in greater detail and assigning some costs to different improvements,\u201d Campos explained ahead of going before City Council, possibly as early as next month.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"mailto:mabennett@postindependent.com\">mabennett@postindependent.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/community-to-get-its-say-about-proposed-sayre-park-improvements-at-thursday-open-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Post Independent<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>10-year-old Derek Menjivar swings across the monkey bars at the playground in Sayre Park on Tuesday afternoon.Chelsea Self\/Post Independent Sayre Park, the home of Strawberry Days, has a few areas of low-hanging fruit that residents want refurbished, replaced and in some instances reimagined altogether.
