{"id":1312586,"date":"2019-07-18T21:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-19T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/gabianelli-revives-music-from-the-golden-age-of-hollywood\/"},"modified":"2019-07-19T14:33:57","modified_gmt":"2019-07-19T20:33:57","slug":"gabianelli-revives-music-from-the-golden-age-of-hollywood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kske\/local-news\/gabianelli-revives-music-from-the-golden-age-of-hollywood\/","title":{"rendered":"Gabianelli revives music from the golden age of Hollywood"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"465\" height=\"620\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/07\/AEDivaCabaret-gpi-071919.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/07\/AEDivaCabaret-gpi-071919.jpg 465w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/07\/AEDivaCabaret-gpi-071919-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 465px) 100vw, 465px\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Nina Gabianelli is out to prove that life is, indeed, a cabaret with her new show, \u201cPolka Dots and Moonbeams; The Music of Jimmy Van Heusen,\u201d premiering this Monday and Tuesday at the Thunder River Theatre Company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The shows are the most recent incarnation of the \u201cDiva Cabaret\u201d series created by Gabianelli and TRTC director Corey Simpson that first introduced the intimate musical storytelling genre to the Roaring Fork Valley in 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Gabianelli worked the cabaret circuit in New York City over two decades ago, and said she was excited for the opportunity to get back to her roots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s the breaking of the fourth wall [between performer and audience] and more of a sharing,\u201d she said \u201cYou\u2019re not presenting to people, you\u2019re presenting with people \u2014 you\u2019re having a conversation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI\u2019m able to create a story I want to tell using songs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The new show focuses on the music of Jimmy Van Heusen \u2014 an unfamiliar name to most who nonetheless was a giant in the golden age of Hollywood movie musicals during the 1940s and \u201950s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI\u2019ve been a fan of his music ever since college in the 1980s,\u201d Gabianelli said. \u201cBing Crosby and Frank Sinatra recorded dozens of his songs. He wrote five musicals. He wrote the music to over 220 films. His work is quite prolific.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cHe\u2019s a composer whose music is known, but his story is not necessarily known. So I kind of wanted to delve into his story and why that was \u2014 why he wasn\u2019t a household name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Some of Van Heusen\u2019s upbeat songs Gabianelli said she\u2019ll cover in the show include \u201cLove and Marriage,\u201d \u201cWould You Like to Swing on a Star\u201d and \u201cHigh Hopes.\u201d She\u2019ll also lend her instrument to popular Van Heusen ballads including \u201cImagination,\u201d \u201cCall Me Irresponsible\u201d and \u201cAll The Way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">David Dyer is the musical director and accompanist for the show, and he and Gabianelli collaborated on the selecting of songs and working out their arrangements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cDavid has the musician skills,\u201d Gabianelli said. \u201cWe had quite a bit of music that we had to cull down to a one hour show. It was a journey. You start with all the songs you want to do and then you end up only being able to do a few of those.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In 2017, Dyer and Gabianelli created the show, \u201cHere I Am\u201d that they toured in cities across the country, culminating in a \u201cstanding room only\u201d performance at Don\u2019t Tell Mama in New York City.
