Tripp turned 100 on July 28.<\/strong><br \/><em>Will Grandbois photo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>John Tripp never wanted to be 100, and he thinks that may be why he reached that milestone this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s reverse psychology,\u201d he quipped. \u201cThe lord doesn\u2019t want me, the devil doesn\u2019t want me, so you\u2019re stuck here with me in purgatory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged that his wife, Rene, who he lost after two years of declining health in 2006, might have had something to do with it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was an unbelievable lady,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The marriage came 72 years earlier, between deployments in 1944. His father told him at the time that \u201cany damn fool who takes on two battles at once I have no sympathy for whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of Tripp\u2019s stories come back to World War II in the end, but the tale actually starts in Waterbury, Connecticut, where he was born on July 28, 1919.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<p><em>Republished in the Post Independent by permission.
