The Compassion Film Festival and Symposium returns to Carbondale\u2019s Third Street Center this weekend with films, workshops and a concert Saturday evening by local favorites Let Them Roar.<\/p>\n

The weekend will include 18 films, including three feature-length films, that the festival\u2019s presenters culled from 100 submissions. Two of the feature films will include Q&A discussions with the filmmakers. Ernesto and Vanessa Quintero will introduce and discuss their film, \u201cA Sacred Journey,\u201d on Friday evening, and filmmaker Deborah Harse will be present Sunday to discuss her film, \u201cA Miracle A Day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eight different workshops also will dot the weekend, including three in Spanish, and a Sunday morning yoga session will be conducted in both English and Spanish.<\/p>\n

The Way of Compassion Foundation, whose mission is \u201cto inspire people and organizations to engage in compassionate activities by providing education and resources that highlight the tools and resources to put compassion into action,\u201d is presenting the festival. Foundation director Aaron Taylor said the goal of the festival is highlighting those organizations and individuals that are engaged in compassionate action.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about displaying what it looks like and what are some of the inspirations and ideas behind compassionate actions in our world, with the idea and the hope that when people leave [the festival] they feel like, \u2018I can do that,\u2019 or, \u2018My skill-set can be applied in this different way to help my neighbors out, help my communities out,\u2019\u201d Taylor said.<\/p>\n

The workshops, Taylor said, are focused around providing tools and resources for people to bring compassionate actions into their lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of them might be focused on something personal like, \u2018How do I cultivate genuine happiness,\u2019 or there\u2019s a workshop called \u2018Bias-Free Compassion\u2019 about how you incorporate this idea of privilege into a compassionate lens,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really about how you combine celebration and coming together with the encouragement of more kindness and compassion in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
