And now the exuberant Texas native is finally getting her shot, with fun introductory singles such as \u201cGood Lord.\u201d Just after coming off tour with Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20, Anderson \u2014 who is one of CMT\u2019s Next Women of Country \u2014 settled into a comfy couch for a cheerful chat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CMT: I understand you moved here to Nashville as a teenager. What do you remember most about the conversations with your parents leading up to that decision to move?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh my gosh, I didn\u2019t really ask. I more like told them what I was going to do. So they kind of had to agree. My whole family always knew that I wanted to move to Nashville, and I was going to be a country music star one day. They always knew that was my dream, and so they weren\u2019t exactly surprised when I told them I was leaving.<\/p>\n<div class=\"deferred_content\">Embedded from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1_Nnf3kaqrg?feature=oembed\">www.youtube.com<\/a>. <noscript class=\"deferred_content\" data-deferred-info=\"{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;iframe&quot;}\"><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1_Nnf3kaqrg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p><strong>So when you say \u201calways,\u201d how young is this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I started piano lessons when I was 5.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What was it about country that spoke to you as a 5-year-old?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was raised in Dallas, Texas, and so my mom always had country music playing, and she was always showing me Garth Brooks and Reba McEntire music videos and teaching me about the songwriting world in Nashville. So, country music was always the go-to genre.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What was it about the songwriting world that she was telling you about?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She would always tell me bedtime stories of this wonderful place called Nashville, Tennessee. And she would always say something like, \u201cYou know, in Nashville, you can either write your own songs and sing them, or you can just sing them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She knew a lot about Nashville because singing was what she wanted to do as well. (laughs) Just smiling, trying to get people to give me the time of day. That\u2019s what\u2019s amazing about Nashville. People are very giving with their time, and I\u2019m very, very thankful for that because I never felt like I should have gotten to where I am that quickly. And that\u2019s because of the good people on Music Row.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But I would imagine you were told \u201cno\u201d more than once, as well.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, you know what\u2019s funny? I probably have, but I\u2019m such an optimistic that I don\u2019t even remember being told no. I\u2019ve been told, \u201cHey, just keep writing.\u201d And to me as a 17-year-old, it\u2019s like, \u201cSo you\u2019re telling me there\u2019s a chance? Being able to probably believe in myself a little more than I should at times, maybe. Yeah, I think that\u2019s always been a gift He\u2019s given me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You sang \u201cGood Lord\u201d on the <em>Today<\/em> Show. What goes through your mind as the seconds count down before you go live across the country?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I wasn\u2019t even thinking about all the people who would be watching until one of the producers came up to me. He\u2019s like, \u201cAre you ready to sing in front of millions of people?\u201d And initially that would make someone nervous, but my first reaction was like, \u201cHeck yes! The satisfaction \u2014 you know, it\u2019s more of a feeling of absolute joy and peace. Because for some reason on stage, that\u2019s the one place I don\u2019t think about myself. If you get too inside your head or think about, \u201cHow\u2019s my hair look or my makeup?\u201d \u2014 that\u2019s not the purpose of performing. All I see are all those people who are giving me their time and their money, and it\u2019s pretty hard not to just feel thankful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For those who may not understand everything that goes into launching a career, can you tell me what your day-to-day thoughts are like?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are waves. So, there\u2019s waves of optimism, like I said. There\u2019s also waves of discouragement. There\u2019s days where I feel like I\u2019m going to conquer the world, and then there\u2019s days I feel like, \u201cIs this ever going to happen?\u201d And then, in the end, I know where I\u2019m going to end up. It\u2019s just when you have those hard days, it\u2019s hard to see it sometimes.<\/p>\n<p>But I think it\u2019s important to start your day with gratitude, end it with gratitude, and when you look back on the hard days, it\u2019s pretty easy to see why those were necessary a month later. And you don\u2019t even remember the bad days most of the time. You\u2019re like, \u201cI was crying about what?\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cWhy was I crying about that? Oslin was one of your influences. That struck me as pretty interesting.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh my gosh. Well, I grew up playing piano, and at first, I hated the lessons because my piano teacher was making me play classical Beethoven \u2014 a great guy, but I\u2019m just not the biggest fan of classical music. My mom, one day, was just fed up with me being a brat, complaining to her, and she showed me a video of K.T. Oslin, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles playing piano, and I was sold. And so I listened to K.T. Oslin records my whole life. I used to tell myself, \u201cThis is why you\u2019re taking piano lessons. This is why you\u2019re playing Beethoven. And honestly, even if they didn\u2019t ask me, I\u2019m pretty loud, so it\u2019s pretty hard not to know what I\u2019m thinking because I tell you what I\u2019m thinking all the time!<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know how to direct videos, but I know what I want to see, and thank goodness for people who know the day-to-day in-and-outs of everything. I\u2019m not a very good \u201cmake it happen\u201d person.
