Big John might have gotten his nickname because of his 6\u20197\u2019\u2019 stature, but it\u2019s his large personality and willingness to help people that seems to really stick when customers meet him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s
\nnever met a stranger \u2014 he\u2019s just that kind of guy,\u201d said Jan Harr, who works
\nfor John Lindsey in the administrative office at Big John\u2019s Ace Hardware in
\nGlenwood Springs. \u201cHe loves to talk to people and loves to share knowledge \u2014
\npeople just really love him.\u201d<\/p>\n

When
\nBig John had to close his previous location, Big John\u2019s Building & Home,
\ndue to losing his lease in 2010, John\u2019s big, friendly personality and top-notch
\ncustomer service remained in the memories of those who knew him. Big John and
\nhis family had moved to Arizona, but his absence was felt in Glenwood.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce a
\nfriend, always a friend \u2014 John is one of those guys,\u201d said Trey Holt, who has
\nbeen friends with John for 30 years. \u201cHe takes a lot of pride in being a friend
\n\u2014 not just an acquaintance, but really being there for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just as
\nJohn had been thinking of moving back to Glenwood to open a sporting goods
\nstore, he heard that a space in the old Subaru building was available and that
\nhis name came up in the conversation about ideal tenants. His return to
\nGlenwood was meant to be.<\/p>\n

Locals\u2019 choice<\/strong><\/p>\n

Big
\nJohn\u2019s Ace Hardware had only been open for six weeks in 2014 when it picked up
\nthe Glenwood Springs Post Independent\u2019s Locals\u2019 Choice award for best
\nhardware\/home improvement store. It\u2019s now won the award for six straight years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s
\na real source of pride for me,\u201d Big John said. \u201cPeople said, \u2018man, did we ever
\nmiss you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Holt
\ncan\u2019t count the number of times he\u2019s been at breakfast or lunch with John when
\npeople come up to the table to ask him about a project that has them stumped.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ll
\ncome up to ask how they can fix something and he always helps them figure it
\nout,\u201d Holt said. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t leave work when he leaves the store.\u201d<\/p>\n

Big
\nJohn believes we\u2019re all in the business of serving others, and he has a
\nphilosophy about how to succeed.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything
\nis cause and effect,\u201d he said. \u201cGood service equals good results. Medium
\nservice equals medium results. Bad service equals bad results.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harr
\nsaid Big John\u2019s knowledge about the products in the store is obvious when
\ncustomers talk to him. He\u2019s great at troubleshooting and often helps people
\nfigure out the best way to reach their desired outcome.<\/p>\n

By
\ntreating people the way he\u2019d want to be treated, customer service at Big John\u2019s
\nisn\u2019t just friendly, it\u2019s genuine.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know
\nI\u2019m going to give customers the right solution to whatever problem they\u2019re
\nworking on,\u201d Big John said. \u201cI\u2019ll get goosebumps when I know what I told them
\nis going to work \u2014 I get a lot of satisfaction from that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nsaid you can bring a part in to Big John\u2019s Hardware and they\u2019ll help you find
\nit in the store, or they\u2019ll order it for you to ensure you buy the right item.<\/p>\n

\nfocused and driven, and he\u2019s all about making his business work in a tough
\neconomy against big-box stores,\u201d Holt said. \u201cThe personal care is there, and
\nyou can even see it in his employees\u2019 character.\u201d<\/p>\n
