Paul Bushong has personal reasons for supporting hospice care organizations.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really a little selfish. I\u2019m planning on taking advantage of it before too long. I\u2019ll be 91 next month,\u201d Bushong told the first class of the first Paul Bushong Palliative Care Fellowship.<\/p>\n

The new program is run by HomeCare and Hospice of the Valley, which provides home healthcare for severely ill and near-death patients.<\/p>\n

Currently, the program is
\nonly open to current HomeCare & Hospice of the Valley staff, but by next
\nyear, executive director Sylvia Allais hopes to expand the training to others.<\/p>\n

The first 25 fellows \u201cwill
\ngo through certifications, and become the preceptors, I hope, for future
\nfellowships,\u201d Allais said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope to invite students,
\nnurses, and others from different disciplines to come join us in a future
\nfellowship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bushong is the sole sponsor and benefactor of the organization, providing scholarships for nurses, nursing assistants, social workers and chaplains. Recipients to take part in a year-long training that culminates in a test and certification from the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association.<\/p>\n

Palliative care focuses on
\ncomfort and quality of life, using active management of pain and other
\nsymptoms, as well as addressing psychological, social and spiritual issues
\noften experienced with serious illness and at the end of life.<\/p>\n

Allais also wants the
\nfellowship to pave the way for a permanent, physical hospice to serve the
\nRoaring Fork Valley.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to build a hospice
\nhouse in our community, and there has been a lot of talk about that,\u201d Allais
\nsaid.<\/p>\n

Hospice of the Valley was
\npart of a proposed development across the river from West Bank, but that
\nproposal was denied.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fellowship is building
\na foundation to have the right skills and knowledge to support our community,
\nand support a home like that,\u201d Allais said.<\/p>\n

With Garfield County\u2019s
\nelderly population expected to grow in the next decade, hospice and palliative
\noptions are critical, Allais said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that the aging
\npopulation is going to triple by 2030,\u201d Allais said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople want to be at home, and how do we keep them at home? By providing them with comprehensive support, regardless of their disease progression,\u201d Allais said.<\/p>\n
