According to U.S. breast cancer statistics, approximately one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime.<\/p>\n

Marlane Miller has battled the disease twice.<\/p>\n

Recently it was announced that the breast cancer survivor and advocate who received treatment at the Calaway\u2022Young Cancer Center had contributed $400,000 to advance breast health at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.<\/p>\n

The gift has allowed Valley View to acquire additional tools and equipment to advance its work of providing comprehensive and compassionate care to its patients.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have earmarked some of this very generous gift for several things at the hospital,\u201d Jennifer Butterfield, MD, Valley View breast health team member and plastic and reconstructive surgeon with the Mount Sopris Plastic Surgery Center, said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne is our Tomosynthesis machine. That was something that we knew we needed to improve and get 3D mammography here. We have had that about a year now and that was something we were looking at when we received Marlane\u2019s gift,\u201d Butterfield said. \u201cThe ability to do MRI guided breast biopsies, that was another thing that we were able to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Additionally, Miller\u2019s gift has enabled the hospital to perform wireless breast biopsies.<\/p>\n

Instead of a wire being placed for needle localization, doctors now insert a small, radiofrequency bead into a patient\u2019s breast.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich means that women do not have to come in and have a wire sticking out of them while they are waiting to get their surgery,\u201d Butterfield said.<\/p>\n

After enduring difficulties at hospitals in Dallas during her first battle with breast cancer, Miller\u2019s time at Valley View Hospital\u2019s Calaway\u2022Young Cancer Center was one she will never forget.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn all the years of fear, pain and side-effects, I\u2019ve never had the extraordinary treatment that I\u2019ve received from the world class team of oncological professionals and angel nurses at the Calaway\u2022Young Cancer Center,\u201d Miller said in the news release.<\/p>\n
