{"id":1316857,"date":"2019-11-20T17:28:14","date_gmt":"2019-11-21T00:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/?p=991072"},"modified":"2019-11-20T17:28:14","modified_gmt":"2019-11-21T00:28:14","slug":"illness-closes-all-schools-in-grand-junction-school-district","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kske\/local-news\/illness-closes-all-schools-in-grand-junction-school-district\/","title":{"rendered":"Illness closes all schools in Grand Junction school district"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"261\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/11\/Associated-Press-logo.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/11\/Associated-Press-logo.png 500w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/11\/Associated-Press-logo-300x157.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>All 46 schools in Grand Junction-area District 51 have been closed for cleaning because of a possible norovirus outbreak among students and staff.<\/p>\n<p>Colorado Public Radio&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpr.org\/2019\/11\/20\/every-mesa-county-school-is-closing-thursday-as-an-unknown-norovirus-like-illness-spreads\/\">reports<\/a>&nbsp;six of the schools in Mesa County had closed as of Wednesday afternoon before the districtwide shutdown was announced.<\/p>\n<p>All the schools also will be closed Friday heading into the Thanksgiving break, which lasts the entire week of the holiday.<\/p>\n<p>Tanya Marvin, the school district\u2019s nursing coordinator, says, \u201cWe are taking this highly unusual action because this virus is extremely contagious and spreading quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of norovirus include diarrhea and vomiting that lasts between 12 and 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Two Garfield County school districts, Roaring Fork and Garfield Re-2, said they are monitoring the situation, but that they have not seen the symptoms among students in schools from Basalt to Rifle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur health staff is not seeing any of these symptoms in our schools, nor have they seen an increase in or alarming rate of illness.\u201d Roaring Fork Schools spokesperson Kelsy Been said. \u201cOf course, this is something&nbsp;we\u2019re keeping a close eye on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Added Garfield Re-2 spokesperson Theresa Hamilton, \u201cOur custodial staffs are using cold and flu season protocols.\u201d Thursday is already the last day of school before the week-long Thanksgiving break.
