{"id":1316860,"date":"2019-11-20T18:21:36","date_gmt":"2019-11-21T01:21:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/?p=991068"},"modified":"2019-11-20T18:21:36","modified_gmt":"2019-11-21T01:21:36","slug":"career-week-at-ses-asks-age-old-question-what-do-you-want-to-be-when-you-grow-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kske\/local-news\/career-week-at-ses-asks-age-old-question-what-do-you-want-to-be-when-you-grow-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Career Week at SES asks age-old question, \u2018what do you want to be when you grow up?\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"619\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/11\/CareerWeek-gpi-112119-1024x619.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/11\/CareerWeek-gpi-112119-1024x619.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/11\/CareerWeek-gpi-112119-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.postindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/11\/CareerWeek-gpi-112119-768x464.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><figcaption><strong>Sopris Elementary School teacher Katherine Houchin talks to Principal Dave Lindenberg about his decision to become school administrator, during an all-student assembly to celebrate Career Week at SES on Monday.<\/strong><br \/><em>John Stroud\/Post Independent<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Two marine biologists, two large animal veterinarians, a plumber, a photographer, a lawyer, a television reporter, a nurse, an actor and a fashion designer.<\/p>\n<p>Ask the Sopris Elementary School fifth-grade leadership team what they want to be when they grow up, and that\u2019s what they\u2019ll tell you \u2014 at least on this particular day.<\/p>\n<p>The Glenwood Springs school, from kindergarten all the way up through fifth grade, has been asking students this week to give some serious thought to that question.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all part of preparing younger students to make the transition to middle school and then on to high school when career path and college choices are ultimately made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting an early perspective on what life looks like and where they\u2019re headed is really important,\u201d SES Counselor Megan Rentz said. \u201cRight now, we\u2019re just wanting them to get excited about their futures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The idea arose from some of the end-of-school-year discussions last spring, and what seemed to be missing from the school\u2019s counseling program, Rentz said.<\/p>\n<p>Sopris\u2019 first career week invited a sampling of professionals from the community to come in Monday during the all-school crew assembly and talk about their jobs. Included were a firefighter\/paramedic, a newspaper reporter and the city\u2019s mayor, who spoke about what it is they do, how long they\u2019ve been doing it, when and why they decided to do their particular job.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rentz even offered that, when she was in kindergarten, she really wanted to be a nurse, \u201cso that I could help people\u201d \u2014 except for that \u201cblood and guts\u201d thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I decided to be a counselor instead, where I get to help kids every day,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>SES Principal David Lindenberg was asked why he became a school principal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thought never actually crossed my mind,\u201d Lindenberg said of when he was in elementary school.<\/p>\n<p>But, \u201cI love being able to come to school every day and having all of you in my family.
