Michael Martin Murphey will bring his Cowboy Christmas show to the Rifle’s Ute Theater starting at 7 p.m. tonight.<\/strong>

Michael Martin Murphey\u2019s love of combining cowboys with Christmas began more than 30 years ago in the small Texas town of Anson, where the annual Texas Cowboys\u2019 Christmas Ball has been held since 1885.<\/p>\n

\u201cI fell in love watching the older couples dance and the dances being passed on to the younger people,\u201d Murphey said. \u201cThe Cowboy Christmas Ball is steeped in everything I hold dear of growing up in Texas at Christmas. The women make their own costumes and clothes and the men still wear string ties and frock coats. It\u2019s a family reunion of friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murphey will bring a bit of that cowboy Christmas spirit to Rifle\u2019s Ute Theater tonight in his Michael Martin Murphey Cowboy Christmas show starting at 7 p.m. It is the 26th consecutive year that he has done the show in November and December, and it has increased in popularity every year.<\/p>\n

Murphey, who shot to fame in the 1970s on the strength of chart topping hits like \u201cWildfire,\u201d \u201cGeronimo\u2019s Cadillac,\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s Forever For\u201d and \u201cLong Line of Love\u201d said that his show differs from other seasonal presentations because it connects the Christmas story to rural communities, farmers and ranchers.<\/p>\n

\u201cGod first sent an angel to the livestock people \u2014 shepherds in the fields,\u201d he said. \u201cThat underscores that Jesus came for all people, all races and all classes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my favorite season of the year. We remember our fathers and mothers. We celebrate our children and we treasure our friends and the many blessings given by our Lord. It really brings out the very best in all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Through the years, Murphey has proven his versatility as a musician, finding success by crossing genres from pop to country, bluegrass and western music. He followed his heart in 1990, returning to the music he loved as a boy with the release of \u201cCowboy Songs,\u201d which featured reworked versions of classic songs including \u201cTumbling Tumbleweeds,\u201d \u201cThe Streets of Laredo,\u201d and \u201cHappy Trails.\u201d<\/p>\n

The success of that record spurred Murphey to continue in the cowboy music vein, releasing several more cowboy-themed records, including three \u201cCowboy Christmas\u201d albums.<\/p>\n

In 2009, Murphey took another turn into bluegrass with the release of the album \u201cBuckaroo Blue Grass.\u201d He repeated the formula he used on \u201cCowboy Songs\u201d by offering new versions of classic bluegrass songs such as \u201cCarolina in the Pines\u201d, \u201cFiddlin\u2019 Man\u201d, \u201cLost River\u201d and \u201cWhat Am I Doing Hanging Around.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2016 Murphey took yet another turn, releasing \u201cAustinology \u2014 Alleys of Austin\u201d in which he pays tribute to his time in the early \u201970s Austin, Texas, \u201cOutlaw country\u201d music scene that included such country music legends as Willie Nelson, David Allan Coe and Jerry Jeff Walker.<\/p>\n
