Captions<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Hotel Colorado announced the arrival of Christmas with a bang at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/hotel-colorados-30th-annual-lighting-ceremony-to-illuminate-glenwood-springs-friday\/\">the 30<sup>th<\/sup> annual<\/a> lighting ceremony Friday.<\/p>\n<p>For Glenwood Springs resident Lisa Hartert, who has been to at least 10 lighting events, this years\u2019 show was as fabulous as always.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving the lights go on at the countdown, and then all the fireworks was terrific,\u201d Hartert said.<\/p>\n<p>Hartert\u2019s only criticism was the weather. \u201cThis year was a little wet, a little cold,\u201d Hartert said.<\/p>\n<p>Krista Lasko of Carbondale nearly made her family turn around because of the wet freezing weather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe almost turned around today because the roads were horrible coming from Carbondale,\u201d Lasko said.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Lasko was glad to attend the event for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFireworks are one my favorite things, and I love seeing the Hotel Colorado decked out in Christmas,\u201d Lasko said.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of people crowded into the street below the hotel\u2019s courtyard to listen to a range of holiday musical acts, and cheered for the five-minute fireworks show from the iconic twin turrets of the hotel.<\/p>\n<p>The slightly inclement weather made it possible for Michelle Zinser, who has lived in the area for three years, to attend the lighting show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m usually not here, but because of the snow and everything my family wasn\u2019t able to make it,\u201d Zinser said.<\/p>\n<p>Dieter Rittner, a Hotel Colorado banquet team member, also attended the show for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been here for three years, and I never came down here,\u201d Rittner said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s mind-boggling what it does for Glenwood Springs,\u201d Rittner said.<\/p>\n<p>Another newcomer to the ceremony was Rifle resident and 2020 Garfield County Fair &amp; Rodeo princess Leann Brand, who said she would definitely come back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s really pretty \u2013 it\u2019s my favorite time of year. I love it,\u201d Brand said.<\/p>\n<p>Several hours before the 500,000-plus lights were turned on, Craig Melville, spokesman for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/business\/glenwood-springs-historic-hotel-colorado-under-new-ownership\/\">Melville family<\/a>, which owns the hotel, asked guests in his opening remarks to remember the ideals that make America unique.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us as Americans focus on our common values this Christmas season, values central not only to Christianity, but to Judaism and Islam as well.
